About this Item: Methuen, London, 1939. Cloth. Condition: Good. 47 Plates, 1 Folding Map (illustrator). First Edition. This is Philby's last, great jaunt across the Saudi desert, made at the request of his friend and employer, King Ibn Saud. The success of his travels across mostly unexplored lands along the vague Saudi- Yemen border and into the Haudramaut was heavily dependent on his being known as an emissary of the Saudi King. Philby had left the employ of the British government a dozen years before, and loses no opportunity to criticize British imperial designs in Arabia, previous desert travellers, and the Aden (British) authorities who decided he was "the enemy" as the result of this trip. Philby sired and neglected a son, Kim Philby, who became (about the time of this writing) a spy in the secret employ of the USSR. But the father was a meticulous explorer of Sheba (Shabwa) and this is a thorough record of his travels there in the twilight of his influence as an advisor to Ibn Saud. Pages xx, 485 with index and appendices. Philby complains about the scale of the map, very detailed but print so small that a magnifying glass is welcome. Green cloth faded as is usual in this book, slight wear at the corners and at the top of the spine, bright gilt title on the spine, clean and tight inside, hint of foxing on preliminary pages, no prior owner marks, and protected in a clear, mylar sleeve. About this Item: Methuen & Co., Ltd. 36 Essex Street, Strand, W.C.2., London, 1939. FIRST EDITION Large 8vo, 6.75 x 9.5 inches, bound in light green cloth, gilt, xix + 485 pp. Only light wear to extremities with some spotting to edges, otherwise a very good copy indeed. Book plate of Mahmud Ali Ghul* to front paste down. Inscription in ink to front free endpaper. Illustrated by 62 monochrome photographic plates and a large folding map of Routes in South-West Arabia, 16 x 23 inches. Philby was the foremost Arabist of his time. * This copy comes from the library of Mahmud al-Ghul the distinguished Arabist and Scholar; each volume has his bookplate. He specialised in ancient South Arabian languages; taught Arabic at SOAS from at least 1957-59, during which time he inspired Major M. D. van Lessen to collect and record South Arabian inscriptions; Ghul later taught at the American University in Beirut and Yarmuk University in Irbid, Jordan. During the early 1970s he was the first scholar to identify a class of so-called South Arabian minuscule inscriptions on wooden sticks which were used to record daily records, and for which he proposed an initial decipherment in late 1977. In 1959 he presented three ancient South Arabian stone inscriptions to The British Museum and published numerous scholarly papers on Arabian language and archaeology. He died in December 1983.
