Hardcover. Condition: Good-VG condition. First Edition. Brussels [Belgium] / London: Librairie Européenne, Place Royale / Trubner, 1859. SIGNED by the AUTHOR, Major General [Charles Guillaume] Bormann (inventor of the historically important Bormann fuse) and INSCRIBED with 8 lines "in friendly remembrance" to Lieutenant de Sampaio e Pina, Royal Portuguese Navy. The author has dated his inscription "Brussels, June 18th, 1859." Good+ condition overall. Internally Very Good. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Moderate wear to the extremities of the cover. Previous owner's bookplate. Hinges are sound. Pages are clean and unmarked, with almost NO foxing. NOT a library discard. Text in English: "I have preferred leaving the whole in English, as the most important of my quotations are works in that language." The author of this book invented the Bormann fuse. A Belgian state secret for many years, the design of the Bormann time fuse leaked out in the 1850s and achieved instant popularity as an easily maufactured and waterproof fuse. Many other fuse types were based on its design. It was used for field and siege services, and was accurate and reliable, especially for spherical-case shot. Throughout the Civil War, the Union Army used artillery rounds equipped with high-quality factory-made Bormann fuses. Confederate forces initially had access to good Bormann fuzes, but as the war went on Union blockades prevented resupply from overseas. The Confederates established a factory to produce the fuzes but quality was a serious problem. Fully four-fiths of the shells exploded prematurely, very many of them in the gun. Attempts to correct the quality problems were unsuccessful. Confederate troops were then forced to rely on paper fuzes that were produced by hand in cottage industry. That one difference turned out to be a key to some of the Union Army's victories. For example at Gettysburg, the Confederates expected heavy barrages from their artillery to soften up the Union lines prior to Pickett's charge. However, there was a quality control problem with the South's paper fuses and most of their artillery rounds landed harmlessly 200 meters beyond the target. As a result Union forces were still at full strength and Pickett's charging Confederates were cut to pieces by a hail of bullets. Bormann inscribed this book to Lieutenant de Sampaio e Pina, Royal Portuguese Navy. A google search revealed that a warship in the Royal Portuguese Navy was named in honor of "de Sampaio e Pina" although it is not clear if it was for the Lieutenant or perhaps a relative with the same name. Original pale yellow endpapers. Bound in the original very dark brown (almost black) cloth, stamped in bright gold on the spine. INSCRIBED/SIGNED by the AUTHOR. First Edition. Hardcover. Good-VG condition. 8vo. xii, 167pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.
