Published in 1883, this is the First Edition of this classic work on the folklore, Mythology and Fairy Tales of Shropshire, this is a Rare Large Paper copy, the list of subscribers at the rear of the book records under one hundred copies of the large paper edition, book is bound in an old contemporary Half Leather Binding, with raised bands, titled and decorated in gilt to the spine, top edge gilded, internally illustrated with a coloured map, 12 inches tall approx., 672 pages, the binding has some old surface scrapes to the leather, the cloth has some mild patchy marking and some darkening, some corner rubbing, else the binding is in good solid condition, leather joints in good order with no cracking, internally fitted with marbled endpapers, page edges untrimmed, a few minor marks else contents generally nice and clean. Large Paper copy, 92 copies noted on list of subscribers. 4to. pp. xiv, [ii], [ii], additional leaf, 672, including 6pp. list of subscribers at rear. Hand coloured folding map of the county facing p. 368. Musical examples. Three additional leaves and a 'Notice' bound in following p. 176, see below. Excellent condition. Contemporary half green morocco marbled cloth with gilt ruled borders raised bands gilt decorated spine two red leather labels lettered gilt marbled endpapers. An additional leaf bound in at front with pastedown details for subscribers on purchasing Part I. and a handwritten note by Burne stating: 'Specially chosen copy carefully packed and sent to order to c/o Messrs Hullah & Co., 23 Bedford St. Covent Garden April 1883.' Three additional leaves, final page blank, bound in with two handwritten signed letters, three postcards and a receipt for Part II all pastedown following p. 176 addressed from Charlotte Sophia Burne, Pyebirch, Eccleshall to F. C. Brooke Esq. of Ufford, Woodbridge, Suffolk dated 1884 & 1885. All are concerned with the order and dispatch of Part I & Part II of a 'Shropshire Folk-Lore'. An additional letter dated 1889 is loosely inserted consisting of about 65 words in which Burne requests payment for an overdue amount from Mr Brooke for Part III. Obviously overlooked because of his death. There is also a printed 'Notice' bound in from Burne concerning the need for a third part. Georgina Frederica Jackson (1823? – 1895) published a 'Shropshire Word-Book' in 1879. Due to ill-health she had to abandon her work on 'Shropshire Folk-Lore' seeking the assistance of Burne who wrote and edited it. Charlotte Sophia Burne (1850 – 1923) was a writer and editor who became the first woman to become president of the Folklore Society. Francis Capper Brooke (1810 – 1886) of Ufford Place was a captain in the Grenadier Guards and a bibliophile who lived near and corresponded with Edward Fitzgerald. A couple of small marks on upper cover, very slight rubbing at head and foot of spine. An exquisite binding in near fine condition of a classic work on the legends, traditions, superstitions and customs of Shropshire. About fine. Seller Inventory # C46695
