About this Item: Arkham House, Sauk City, Wisconsin, 1959. Handsomely bound in finely woven Novelex black cloth and stamped brightly in gilt on the spine. Very clean and tight throughout, except for a name printed in ink at the bottom of the front endpaper. Light bumping to the bottom corners. In an attractive dust jacket with the price of $5.00 at the top of the inside front flap. Striking Richard Taylor art on the front panel. Light edge-rubbing and tiny chips at the corners and at the top and bottom of the spine ends. Overall, an attractive copy. "Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890– 1937)—known as H.P. Lovecraft—was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors in his genre. Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island, where he spent most of his life. His father was confined to a mental institution when Lovecraft was three years old. His grandfather, a wealthy businessman, enjoyed storytelling and was an early influence. Intellectually precocious but sensitive, Lovecraft began composing rudimentary horror tales by the age of eight, but suffered from overwhelming feelings of anxiety. He encountered problems with classmates in school, and was kept at home by his highly strung and overbearing mother for illnesses that may have been psychosomatic. In high school, Lovecraft was able to better connect with his peers and form friendships. He also involved neighborhood children in elaborate make-believe projects, only regretfully ceasing the activity at seventeen years old. Despite leaving school in 1908 without graduating—he found mathematics particularly difficult—Lovecraft had developed a formidable knowledge of his favored subjects, such as history, linguistics, chemistry, and astronomy. Lovecraft returned to Providence from New York in 1926, and over the next nine months he produced some of his most celebrated tales including "The Call of Cthulhu", canonical to the Cthulhu Mythos. Never able to support himself from earnings as author and editor, Lovecraft saw commercial success increasingly elude him in this latter period, partly because he lacked the confidence and drive to promote himself. He subsisted in progressively straitened circumstances in his last years; an inheritance was completely spent by the time he died at the age of 46." (Wikipedia) First Edition with only 2,500 copies printed. Seller Inventory # 385

About this Item: Sauk City,WI: Arkham House, 1959, 1959. First Edition. Octavo. 313pp. Publisher's gilt titled black cloth; grey endpapers. Shrouded in a Richard Taylor dustwrappper, showing an amphibian hand prodtruding through some ruined shutters, titles in black to front cover and spine, rear cover shows a list of titles from "20 years of Arkham House"; unclipped. Binding is tight, slight bumping to head and tail of spine otherwise very pretty. Dust jacket with minor wear, still bright. Internally pristine. A very nice copy barely tainted by its contact with the terrors of beyond. Copies of this book in the main tend to have some splashes of ichor, staining from ill advised rituals etc. This copy has mostly escaped such punishment, presumably through judicious use of the last passage of the Sigsand MS. As well as the title story, a couple of Lovecraft/Derleth posthumous collaborations and a spot of juvenilia, this volume also contains a wealth of little details about Lovecraft, his life, his loves, his chin and his friends. Indispensable should you want to build your own Howard Phillips Homonculus. There's cool, and then there's this stuff, sacred to those that believe that freedom lies in doubt and that doubt is the only certain thing. Seller Inventory # 44807

Crawford, Dagon, by H. P. L. , The Strange High House in the Mist by H. P. L. , and, The Outsider by H. P. L. "The UAPA reinvigorated Lovecraft and incited him to contribute many poems and essays; in 1916, his first published story, The Alchemist, appeared in the United Amateur Press Association. The earliest commercially published work came in 1922, when he was thirty-one. By this time he had begun to build what became a huge network of correspondents. His lengthy and frequent missives would make him one of the great letter writers of the century. Among his correspondents were Robert Bloch (Psycho) , Clark Ashton Smith, and Robert E. Howard (Conan the Barbarian series). Many former aspiring authors later paid tribute to his mentoring and encouragement through the correspondence. His oeuvre is sometimes seen as consisting of three periods: an early Edgar Allan Poe influence; followed by a Lord Dunsany–inspired Dream Cycle; and finally the Cthulhu Mythos stories. However, many distinctive ideas and entities present in the third period were introduced in the earlier works, such as the 1917 story "Dagon", and the threefold classification is partly overlapping.". About this Item: Arkham House, Sauk City, Wisconsin, 1959. Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. Taylor, Richard (jacket) (illustrator). First Edition. Sauk City, Wisconsin: Arkham House, 1959. First Edition. One of 2527 copies issued. Signed by Robert Bloch at his entry, "Out of the Ivory Tower" (page 171). Jacket art by Richard Taylor. Small octavo (7 5/8" x 5 1/4") , 313 pp. Near fine book - and this near fine is about as close as you're going to get to fine and still be Near Fine, with no salient flaws (in fact - call it fine; most people would) - in a Very Good plus, very pleasing, unclipped jacket still showing the original $ 5.00 price tag. Jacket has very small traces of peripheral wear, and the standard age-toning of the (white) jacket back. Sharp and bright, no fading anywhere. Handsome copy. A famous aggregation of horror tales, thoughts, reminiscences and poems, compiled by a master of both writing and compiling in that genre, August Derleth, and centered on honoring Lovecraft, the undisputed master of horror. No, Stephen King can't touch Lovecraft - sorry. The title piece was authored by both Lovecraft and Derleth, as was "The Fisherman of Falcon Point". There is plenty more Lovecraft here, as well as Bloch's piece, and Lovecraft tributes of various kinds from Clark Ashton Smith, Donald Wandrei, Dorothy C. Walter, Derleth, Alfred Galpin, Felix Stefanile, and Joseph Payne Brennan. A scarce, handsomely preserved first edition - a piece of genre history, with the nice added touch of Bloch's signature. l52n. Signed by Contributor. Seller Inventory # 000961

About this Item: Arkham House, Sauk City, WI, 1959. First Edition. First Edition. REVIEW COPY, with tipped-in publisher's slip at the front endpaper. A few notations on the jacket indicate that this copy was a publisher's file copy: a sticker on the spine with the number "44887" in pencil, the same number in pencil on the jacket front panel, and stamped in blue ink on the front pastedown. Several notations and corrections in holograph pencil appear throughout, the word "omit," among others, found on several leaves at the heading. Many numerical notations in pencil appear at the table of contents, suggesting rearrangement for subsequent printings. Very Good plus in a Very Good dust jacket. Extremities lightly rubbed and bumped, slight fraying at a couple of corners, and a few leaves with tiny corner creases. Jacket moderately toned (mostly at the rear panel and at the verso), lightly rubbed, with a few tiny closed tears and brief chipping at the extremities, and a small bruise to the rear panel at the spine fold. Overall, an interesting and perhaps unique copy of the fifth Arkham House collection of Lovecraft's work. Seller Inventory # 121399
