Third edition. [16], 406 pp.; engraved frontispiece illustration; 8vo, contemporary panelled calf, morocco lettering piece. Nathaniel Spinckes (1653-1727), was, according to the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, "a man of considerable learning, proficient in Greek, Latin, Anglo-Saxon, and French, with some knowledge of Oriental languages . . ." He was ordained priest in 1678 and consecrated Bishop in 1713. This, his best-known work, was first published in 1712. This 1726 edition, with the imprint of Thomas Astley, not found on OCLC, though it collates the same as the 1722 third edition published by William Taylor. Separate title pages for sections at page 335 ("Some Few Meditations . . .") and page 369 ("A Collection of Farther Prayers") - both with imprint of William Taylor, 1722. Joints splitting, bit of loss to spine head, 1 square inch of front pastedown torn away at fore-edge of front board. Still quite presentable and sturdy and a nice example of the "Cambridge panel" style binding of the period. Internally about fine. Armorial bookplate of Edward Dalton to front pastedown.
