About this Item: William Heinemann, London, 1911. Orig Quarter Green Cloth, Dec. Condition: Very Good Plus. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). First Trade Edition. This 182+ page artistic benchmark, being an increasingly well respected and energetically applauded offering it is proudly presented with great and well deserved hubris by Hirschfeld Galleries in the publishers original binding. Said binding being Quarter green cloth on gilt decorative ornate boards. Spine titling is wll sunned but book remains overall a beauty to behold with the bounty of pictorial gilt imaging on the ivory toned cover. General title-page for "The Ring of the Niblung.", and sectional title. Additional decorative title-page, frontispiece and 29 color plates tipped-in First trade edition of the second part in Wagner's "Ring of the Niblung" trilogy, with which he had become inspired after travelling extensively in Europe, particularly to Germany, the Alps, and Italy. His illustrations are infused with the European landscape and architectural subjects. Rackham's first successes, which coincided with the fashion for lavishly produced gift books, were illustrations to 'The Ingoldsby Legends' (1898), 'Gulliver's Travels' (1900), and 'Grimm's Fairy Tales' (1900). These were followed by 'The Greek Heroes' (1903), 'Rip Van Winkle' (1905), 'Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens' (1906), and 'Alice in Wonderland' (1907). "From 1905 to 1910, as printing techniques improved, his line became sharper and likewise his detail more intense. In 'Rip Van Winkle' and 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' (1908) he developed his gift for drawing witches, gnomes, fairies, and anthropomorphized trees and brought them to a pitch of vivid characterization, sometimes with an unsettling frisson of horror. Trees with human limbs and faces became one of his trademarks, and may have been throwbacks to childhood memories of the Tradescants' garden [opposite his childhood home]. Despite the fantasy of his subjects, however, Rackham always maintained a strict sense of reality by giving his figures human traits and foibles and naturalistic, even recognizable, settings-illustrations in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' are variously set in Wimbledon Park, Ruislip churchyard, and Walberswick, Suffolk" But enough of the lugubrious however allegorically wise jaw-jacking, enough said of the telluric parameters of select Hirschfeld Galleries' offerings such as this one which take on a life of their own and speak so very loudly for themselves. Read to learn and enjoy; go forth to share and enjoin. Size: 4to. Hardcover Classic. Seller Inventory # 006052
