About this Item: DESCRIPTION OF ITEM: Portrait photograph in profile signed at the base "Nellie Melba, 1904" with strong fountain pen signature in black ink. Photograph was taken by Reutlinger of Paris and is mounted on pink card stamped Melba with details of the studio on the back. HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Born Helen Porter Mitchell in what is now a suburb of Melbourne, Nellie Melba travelled to Europe in 1886. Having little initial success in securing parts in England, she moved to Paris where she received singing lessons from renowned teacher Madame Mathilde Marchesi. As well as developing her vocal technique Marchesi also persuaded her to adopt a stage name, opting for Melba as a contraction of her native city 'Merlbourne'. On the foundations laid in Paris, Melba then went on to become one of the world's greatest female soproano's starring across Europe and the United States, becoming prima donna at the Royal Opera House until the 1920's and touring Canada, New Zealand and her native Australia - famously making a point of performing in small country towns to captivated audiences. Made a Dame in 1918 for her charity work during World War 1, she was elevated to a Grand Dame in 1927 in the UK. DETAILED CONDITION REPORT : Size of photo is 14cm x 10.1cm with pink card mount 15.5cm x 10.9cm. Light handling marks to right margin and bottom left corner of photo and some light spotting on photo - see image.
