Inscribed by author on front free end paper: "To darling Fannie with love from J. F. Byrne Nov 10 '53" Beige cloth with black lettering on spine, rough-trimmed fore-edge, xi + 307 pp. Light soiling and spotting to covers; head and heel of spine slightly chipped, just beginning to fray; corners bumped, with 3 worn to boards. Other than a few small dents, cover edges are sharp, straight, and unworn. Joints, internal hinges, and textblock intact. Binding secure. Other than a single vertical line in pencil in the margin of page 176, text appears free of markings. External library markings consist of library and call number label on spine, barcode label on back cover, and stamped bottom edge. From the Foreword: Frank O'Connor said that "Byrne was the last important bridge between the present and the schoolboy days of the author of 'Ulysses." J. F. Byrne was the model for Joyce's character Cranley in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Byrne was also a cryptographer of sorts, and the last chapter entitled "Chaocipher," includes a 20 page encode message. WorldCat show only six copies extent in libraries. Inscribed by author.
