First published in the UK in 1940, this is a fifth impression of 1946. Some edge wear, chipping and small loss to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed with small loss, folds slightly rubbed, top of page block dyed blue as issued. Price clipped, school prize sticker to front pastedown and small dedication in blue ink to ffep (awarded to Patricia Bateman class 1.4), internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy for its age. 216pp, illustrated. A children's novel by Hungarian emigree author Kate Seredy (1899-1975), the sequel to 'The Good Master'. Set in rural Hungary four years after 'The Good Master', it continues the story of Kate and Jancsi, showing the effect of World War I on the people and land. Quite scarce in this early edition. First UK edition of a book previously published in the USA by Viking in 1939. The boards have quite heavy spotting with the worst affected areas around the top of the spine. Slight gap between pages 128 and 129 revealing the webbing but the binding is otherwise tight. Bookplate on front pastedown. Light browning to page edges but pages otherwise clean and unmarked. The jacket has rubbing to the edges and chipping at the top and bottom of the spine and the corners. Slight spotting to flaps. First printing. Seller Inventory # 008627
