Black and white illustrated frontispiece, showing 'Sir Roger at Church', illustrator not credited. Pale grape coloured cloth covered boards black coloured embossed titles to the front panel and back strip. A selection of vignettes starring Sir Roger de Coverley (a English squire from Queen Anne's reign, espousing the values of an old country gentleman; but, portrayed as a lovable but somewhat inept figure), and other essays from the Spectator magazine from the early 18th century. The magazine production closed 1714. This book showing age and  please see photographs. Softening, rubbing and some fraying of the back strip edges; bumping and rubbing to the book corners (the underlying boards visible), and there is rubbing either side of the back strip and lower book edges. Ink stains, other marks and rubs to the book panels with fading of the back strip. Offset tanning and some marks to the end pages with, surprisingly, very light age toning of the pages. Previous owners name to the top right-hand corner of the free front end page (dated 11/2/03) another owner had placed their rubberstamp to the lower edge of the title page. As already mentioned this book was used as a text and there is evidence of that with black ink marks, underlining of paragraphs and words and marginalia. There is a reverse cock of the spine.
