It talks about small town central TX life in the early 1900s. Cooper modeled some of his characters after real local people. This book has been well loved by countless readers over the years. Newspaper articles and notes by a previous reader outlining all the characters and relationships are loose in volume two. Book is clean and unmarked.

Laid-in is a copy of an article about Madison Cooper and this book by Carol Dawson taken from the Texas Monthly magazine of November, 2000. Story is set in Waco, Texas and is in part the story of two black servants, a boy and a girl taken through adulthood, and the white Lipscomb dynasty they served. Epic novel about life in a small town in Texas. When it was published its thinly disguised characters scandalized some families in Waco, Texas. One of Greene's 50 Best Books On Texas. A. C. Greene says ". it is thought to be the longest novel in book form ever published in the English language.".

Both volumes are in VERY GOOD condition in Good dust jacket protected in removable archival covers. The books themselves show a vintage price in ink on both endpapers, text-block with very light occasional creasing, otherwise the bindings are strong and tight, the texts are clean and unmarked, and the boards remain bright and distinct. The dust jackets show the spines somewhat toned, the extremities marginally shelf rubbed with some shallow chipping, a slightly larger chip of Vol. 1, price-clipped, otherwise remains bright, colorful, and distinct.
