A SIX WEEKS TOUR, THROUGH THE SOUTHERN: AGRICULTURE - [YOUNG,

About this Item: W. Nicoll, at the Paper-Mill, No. 51, in St. Paul's Church-Yard. London, 1768. First Edition. 8vo, [2] + 284 pp; without the half-title and final blank leaf which are sometimes present, but the text is complete, with seven woodcut illustrations. Bound in quarter calf, spine with raised bands, and title label, over marbled boards. This work was the beginning of a most exhaustive inquiry into the state of British agriculture. It began almost by accident, with a simple recording of the crop rotations, the implements used, the cost of labour and provisions, the size of farms, and the horses or oxen employed on holdings of different sizes. Passing reference is also made to local industries, such as the manufacture of Witney blankets, and useful facts and figures about them are mentioned. The work encompasses a vast amount of information that was to transform agriculture in these islands and beyond. A Six Weeks Tour, through the Southern: YOUNG, Arthur.]

About this Item: London: W. Nicoll, 1768, 1768. Octavo (199 x 121 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, decorative gilt spine, red morocco label, red speckled edges. 19th-century engraved armorial bookplate of James FitzGerald Bannatyne (1833-1915) JP and Deputy Lieutenant of Devon, of Haldon House, Devon (demolished 1925). Bound without the half-title, corners a little worn, short split at head of joints but a most appealing copy. Wood-engraved illustrations of farm machinery in the text. First edition of Young's second book, following The Farmer's Letters to the People of England (also 1768). "Arthur Young, like Jethro Tull, was a great agricultural reformer whose influence reached far beyond his own country. England, however, with its increased acreage of cultivated land resulting from the enclosure system, and the consequent rise of great landowners and farmers in the eighteenth century, especially welcomed innovations in agricultural methods. Arthur Young applied statistical methods to the study of agriculture, investigating both the statistics of production and the costs of this particular industry. He obtained his information from a series of extensive tours in England, Ireland and France, where he studied the state of agriculture at first hand. These journeys resulted in the publication of about two hundred and fifty books and pamphlets setting out his ideas and theories" (PMM). A very attractive copy of this key text. Einaudi 6097; Goldsmiths' 10407; Higgs 4283; Printing and the Mind of Man 214. Seller Inventory # 109008

About this Item: London, W.Nicoll, 1768. 8vo, pp. [4], 284; complete with the half-title, but lacking final blank leaf, as often; inscription of W. Pooley to the title; further ownership inscription (dated 1840) to the front free endpaper; light offsetting from the binding onto the edges of the first and final few leaves and from the text on some pages; still a nice copy in contemporary full calf, a little rubbed at extremities, with a gilt morocco lettering-piece to spine.First edition. 'Young's own estimate of this book is that it is one "in which for the first time, the facts and principles of Norfolk husbandry were laid before the public", but important as these facts were . the book is more valuable than Young would have us believe. It laid before the public "the fact and principles" of the husbandry of a line of country from Bradfield to London and from London to South Wales, and the details given were quite all-inclusive. They comprised the crop rotations, the implements used, the cost of labour and provisions, which often varied surprisingly in a few miles, the size of farms, and the horses or oxen employed on holdings of different sizes . Passing reference is [also] made to local industry, such as the manufacture of Witney blankets, and useful facts and figures about it are mentioned' (Fussell).'The Six Weeks' Tour is thus a curious mixture of agriculture, political arithmetic, and art. In comparison with Young's later English tours it seems thin, amateurish . Nevertheless it was successful enough to make the publishers cry for more, and it undoubtedly added to his reputation' (Gazley).Einaudi 6097; Goldsmiths' 10407; Higgs 4283; PMM 214; Rothamsted, p. 163; not in Kress; see Fussell, More Old English farming books, pp. 7172, and Gazley, The Life of Arthur Young, p.35.
