About this Item: Savannah, 1848. [2],88pp. Original printed wrappers. Spine perished, rear wrapper lacking. Moderate foxing and toning. Good. First edition. Despite the title proclaiming this to be issued by the Georgia Historical Society, it was actually published by W.B. Hodgson, issued at his expense as an extra to the series. Most of the text is devoted to the narrative of Hawkins, his observations and travels in 1798-99. "The author of this treatise was for more than thirty years employed by the Government of the United States in its intercourse with the Indians. He was styled by the Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws, and Cherokees, the Beloved Man of the Four Nations. He wrote eight volumes of material relating to the history of the various Indian tribes with whom he treated. These volumes of mss. are filled with details of treaties, his correspondence on the behalf of the tribes with the general and state governments, vocabularies of Indian languages, and records of the manners and customs, religious rites and civil polity of these wonderful aboriginal nations. This treatise is filled with sketches of all these particulars as existing in the Cherokee nation" - Field. An important source for the early Creeks. FIELD 668. DE RENNE II, p.517. HOWES H318, "aa."
