About this Item: Mack, 2017. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Fourth Edition. Mack, 2017. Hardcover in yellow cloth boards. Fourth Edition. 11 x 11 1/2 inches and has 120 pages with 46 color plates. SIGNED by Alec Soth on the title page. BOOK CONDITION: Fine/As New; a tight, clean, square copy. Evolving from a series of road trips along the Mississippi River, Alec Soth’s Sleeping by the Mississippi captures America’s iconic yet oft-neglected "third coast." Soth’s richly descriptive, large format color photographs describe an eclectic mix of individuals, landscapes, and interiors. Sensuous in detail and raw in subject, his book elicits a consistent mood of loneliness, longing and reverie. "In the book’s forty-six ruthlessly edited pictures," writes Anne Wilkes Tucker, "Soth alludes to illness, procreation, race, crime, learning, art, music, death, religion, redemption, politics, and cheap sex The coherence of the project places Soth’s book exactly within the tradition of Walker Evans’ American Photographs and Robert Frank’s The Americans." Like Frank’s classic book, Sleeping by the Mississippi merges a documentary style with a poetic sensibility. The Mississippi is less the subject of the book than its organizing structure. Not bound by a rigid concept or ideology, the series is created out of a quintessentially American spirit of wanderlust. Seller Inventory # 2534

About this Item: London, England: MACK, 2015. Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. Unpaginated. Published in 2015. Retrospective Exhibition Catalog, presented as an Artist Book. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. The First Clamshell Box Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a clamshell box only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Alec Soth: The Catalog gathers together four of his major books as exquisite, small-size facsimile reproductions. Complemented with an Essay by Aaron Schumann that is spread across large-format Postcards. The materials are all neatly housed together in a hardcover clamshell box. The Postcards: 28 full-size, 8 X 8 inch color and black-and-white postcards printed on one side with the actual images shown in the touring exhibition. These are NOT your typical small-size mailer-postcards. These are beautifully printed on thick, glossy stock paper, and are eminently suitable for framing. The Mini-Facsimile Books: "Sleeping By The Mississippi"; "Niagara"; "Broken Manual"; and "Songbook". Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the touring exhibition, which uses the major bodies of work that Soth has published as books since 2004. Presents Alec Soth's "Gathered Leaves". An inspired re-presentation of Soth's significant achievement thus far. The title evokes Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" (1855), the greatest American epic poem, which has influenced photographers as much as (if not more than) writers and poets. "Soth's meteoric rise to international acclaim began with his first book, 'Sleeping By The Mississippi'. It embodies not only a moment in which a new and original voice emerged with an unusual ability to transpose subtle and highly personal stories of local American life, but also marked a significant early event in the photo-book publishing boom we are currently experiencing. The success of his two subsequent volumes, 'Niagara' (2006) and 'Broken Manual' (2010), combined with the hugely influential exploration of self-publishing under his Little Brown Mushroom imprint, have all reinforced Soth's position as a master of the book form. The recent success of 'Songbook' (2015) has seen his return to mainstream book publishing" (Publisher's blurb). Well, when it comes to putting together a book that holds together perfectly, Alec Soth has few peers, and this beautifully conceived and realized Artist Book is further confirmation of the fact. Still, his work is not just a formalist exercise. It is acutely beautiful because Soth handles otherwise heavy socio-philosophical themes with a light touch, that is to say, as an artist (rather than a philosopher). An absolute "must-have" title for Alec Soth collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker by Alec Soth. It is signed directly on the clamshell box itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Clamshell Box Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: The Clamshell Box holds 28 full-size, 8 X 8 inch color and black-and-white postcards that are printed on one side with the actual images shown in the touring exhibition. These are NOT your typical, small-size mailer-postcards. These are beautifully printed on thick, glossy stock paper, and are eminently suitable for framing. A scarce signed copy thus. 4 books, 28 full-size, 8 X 8 inch postcards. Alec Soth's "Sleeping By The Mississippi" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ALEC SOTH TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1910164364. Signed by Author. Seller Inventory # 20175

About this Item: London, England: MACK Publishers, 2017. Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 120 pages. Published in 2017. New Edition of the photographer's masterpiece. One of the greatest art photography books of our time. Limited Slipcased Edition of 150 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the regular trade edition that was published simultaneously with it. Although there have been several editions of the book, this is its very first Limited Edition. The Limited Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Alec Soth and MACK: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial cloth boards with titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Alec Soth. There are two images that appear for the very first time, and they "re-frame" the collection: The frontispiece, "Maiden Rock, Wisconsin", and "Green Island, Iowa", the final image. Essays by Patricia Hampl and Anne Wilkes Tucker. Original 10 X 8 inch color print of "Holt Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana" encased its own white folder and laid into the book. Commemorative 15 X 21 inch folded color poster. Archival slipcase. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Steidl in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published by MACK on the occasion of the landmark exhibition dedicated to the whole book at Beetles + Huxley Gallery London in 2017. Re-presents, in its ultimate collectible Limited Edition format, Alec Soth's "Sleeping By The Mississippi". Which, of course, refers to the recurrence of beds throughout the sequence. "Captures America's iconic yet oft-neglected 'third coast'. Soth's richly descriptive, large-format color photographs present an eclectic mix of individuals, landscapes, and interiors. Elicits a consistent mood of loneliness, longing, and reverie. Like Robert Frank's classic, 'The Americans', merges a documentary style with a poetic sensibility. Not bound by a rigid concept or ideology, the series is created out of a quintessentially American spirit of wanderlust. Thirteen years since the book was first published, the artist's lyrical view has undoubtedly acquired a nuanced significance, one in which hope, fear, desire, and regret coalesce in the evocative journey along this mythic river" (MACK). "With most photography, you look at it, sigh, and pass on, but Soth's work keeps pulling you back to look again because he composes with the skill of the greatest of photographic artists. He's unafraid of humor and irony, which are impossible to leave out of any authentic American vision. He uses color as an integral part of his composition. That is not to say he photographs in color, but that his colors are as important as the people and the things he captures" (John Wood). An absolute "must-have" title for Alec Soth collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Slipcased Edition, indicated/numbered as such by the photographer on the accompanying print. It is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in pencil on the title page by Alec Soth. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in is a 10 X 8 inch original color print of "Holt Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana" that is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in pencil on verso by the photographer. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 46 color plates, 1 frontispiece, 1 additional plate at the end. Selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ALEC SOTH TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1910164895. Signed by Author. Seller Inventory # 21584

Seller Inventory # 2444
