Full-Leather. Condition: Good. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). First Edition. Rare limited edition beautifully signed and likely numbered by Arthur Rackham with what appears to be fountain pen at limition page: "Edition limited to Two Hundred and Fifty Copies for England and One Hundred and Twenty-five Copies for the United States, of which this is No. '80' of the English issue. 'Arthur Rackham.'" Stated at copyright: "Published 1928 by George G. Harrap & Co." Larger 8 1/4" x 10 1/2" gift book design. Cream vellum (leather) boards, whimsically stylish gilt cover and spine titles, moderate cover, edge wear, discoloration, bow. Rough-cut deckled leaves very good, no writing. Frontispiece color plate by Rackham: "Frequently see strange sights, and hear music and voices in the air." Classic two-page illustrated spreads at front and back endpapers in monochromatic golden browns, with varying hues of black & white. Scene features main characters below trees teeming with ghouls and black cats and Sleepy Hollow in b.g. Beautifully, aptly illustrated throughout by the esteemed artist Arthur Rackham. Includes eight richly colored mounted plates with partial-page imagery, decoration, headers and tailpieces throughout. Plates are captioned at adjacent page with vignette verso this preceding page. Bind good; hinges intact. Rare signed limited edition of this classic. Contains a prologue by D. K., Irving's most well known public persona, Diedrich Knickerbocker. One of American literature's most enduring and popular tales, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow tells the tragic story of the love triangle that develops between the ill-fated Ichabod Crane, Brom Bones and Katrina Van Tassel. Lavishly decorated by Rackham in his, by turns, humorous and blood-curdling illustrations. Headless horsemen hail from Northern European storytelling, in German, Irish, Scandinavian (The Wild Hunt) and English legends, and were included in Robert Burns's "Tam o' Shanter" (1790) and The Wild Huntsman (1796). Appearing as omens for those who disregard apparitions, these spectors found victims in proud schemers bearing hubris and arrogance. The most notable, however, was the spector of Sleepy Hollow, who had been riding the trails with his horse among the church yard graves. Enter Brom Bones, who made light of the galloping Hessian as an arrant horseman. He disaffirmed that returning one night from a neighboring village, being overtaken by the midnight trooper. That he had offered to race with him for a bowl of punch and should have won it too, for Daredevil beat the goblin horse all hollow, but as they came to the church bridge, the Hessian bolted and vanished in a flash of flame. All these haunts, told in a hushed undertone as men whisper in the dark, the countenances of the listeners only now and then receiving a casual gleam from the shine of a pipe, sank deep in the mind of Ichabod.Washington Irving was an American author, essayist, biographer and historian of the early 19th century. In 1809, he published, The History of New York, under his most well known public persona, Diedrich Knickerbocker. Irving is best known for his short stories, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle". Printed in Great Britain by H. & J. Pillans & Wilson, Edinburgh. 103 pages. Insured post. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Signed by Artist.

Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American short-story writer, essayist, biographer, historian and diplomat in the early 19th century. He is most well-known for his short-stories Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, for which these are FIRST EDITIONS being sold. No. I, of which Rip Van Winkle is included, is a 2nd printing (according to BAL), and No. VI, of which Sleepy Hollow is included, is a 1st printing (also according to BAL). All points of first printings have been checked and compared. George Washington Nesmith (1800-1890), previous provenance, was a justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court from 1859 to 1870, and was later involved in the administration of the New Hampshire Agricultural College. He was described as being "an intimate friend of Daniel Webster (1782-1852)," and as "one of New Hampshire's most noted jurists." Nesmith's close friendship with Daniel Webster was "one of his most pleasant recollections," and he has long been quoted in matters relating to the history of the great expounder. He was noted as having "resembled Webster somewhat in personal appearance". Nesmith first saw Webster speak in 1818, while Nesmith was still a student at Dartmouth. He became personally acquainted with Webster in 1824, when brothers Daniel and Ezekiel Webster visited a farm that had been their childhood haunt, and over the following years, Nesmith and Webster became very close friends. In 1858, Nesmith wrote a well-received biography of Webster's father, Ebenezer Webster. Nesmith most likely included a work by Webster in the second book to keep pagination relatively similar between the two individually bound works, and also because Webster was his close friend & respected colleague. Incredibly scarce first printing with interesting provenance. Please message us with any questions.

  • 8vo, old full straight-grain morocco gilt; gilt spine. First edition; first printing of Parts I, II and VI. BAL 10106. Marginal ink stains to the last few leaves of text; old ink ownership signature on blank leaf; two short tears, one marginal and the other not affecting legibility. Slight small scuffs to the handsome binding at joints; tight and sound.

First Edition, first issue with top edge gilt. With 8 impressive colour plates and numerous drawings in black and white throughout and with coloured illustrated endpapers all by Arthur Rackham 4to, original dark green cloth lettered and pictorially decorated in gilt on the upper cover, lettered in gilt on the spine, with pictorial endpapers by Arthur Rackham, t.e.g. IN THE SCARCE ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET 103. A bright and fine copy, internally completely free of the spotting which so frequently plagues these titles, the cloth bright and fresh, the scarce jacket with only minor edgewear and a bit of mellowing but still showing very well indeed. RACKHAM S MAGICAL, OTHER-WORLDLY ILLUSTRATIONS ADD A GOTHIC FLAVOR TO THIS CLASSIC TALE. Washington Irving s story of "The Headless Horseman", is one of the true and greatest favorites of American literature. Employing his more adult and almost sinister style it is made all the more wonderful by Arthur Rackham s illustrations. A fine combination of efforts between illustrator and author and probably the best rendering to date of Irving s constantly retold tale.

By 1928, the traditional Rackham book - freely and lavishly illustrated, and lushly produced - was, culturally no longer in fashion nor financially feasible. Artistically, Rackham's work was being overshadowed by a younger generation. Publisher George Harrap stepped in, took up the challenge, and, through production economies, published a new kind of Rackham book. But if the volumes were not as spectacular as in the past, the artwork was no less impressive. Latimore and Haskell 63-64. Riall 164-165.

• Seller image for I REMEMBER: A short and intimate sketch of the dignified seventies, the elegant eighties and the gay nineties in or near the Hudson Valley in the vicinity of Sunnyside, the home of Washington Irving, in the land of Sleepy Hollow. Also a few episodes in the young life of the author for sale by Quill & Brush, member ABAA

First edition. Number 120 of an undisclosed number of copies. INSCRIBED "For my dear friend of many years Caramai Carroll with all best of wishes from the author, Jennie Prince Black, Dec 15th/38." The music composer and pianist Jennie Prince Black (1868 - 1945) was a life-long resident of Irvington, NY, and the person responsible for the memorial to Washington Irving there. There is a chapter dedicated to the story of "the memorial started in 1919 and finished in 1926," including a recounting of the strange phenomenon that occurred the night of her address at Irvington Town Hall on the 50th anniversary of Irving's death. She also writes about playing on the grounds of the Irving estate and the one time she was invited inside; about growing up in the area; and about the famous people who have visited the area. There are humorous sketches from her life both in Irvington and from her very young days wintering with her family in Manhattan. In a tribute to her in her local paper, The Irvington Gazette, the editor wrote, "This tribute to her memory is but a feeble effort to honor her as she should be honored." As is, we hope, this catalog description of her book. 12mo red cloth, gilt-stamped front board, frontis portrait of the author, illustrated with photographic plates, 112pp. A bit of darkening to gutters otherwise near fine. Scarce to rare.
