About this Item: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, United States, 2018. Paperback. Condition: New. Howard Pyle, John J Enneking (illustrator). Language: English. Brand new Book. Snow-Bound: A Winter Idyl is a classic narrative poem by John Greenleaf Whittier, famed for capturing a period in American history which was already ebbing away. This edition includes twenty illustrations by famed artists of the era. The narrative consists of a family living in what would later be known as the John Greenleaf Whittier Homestead, a large home in rural Massachusetts. During a harsh winter, as a blizzard of snow rages outside for three days, the family are snowed in and take to telling one another stories. The atmosphere of warmth, conviviality and rural solidarity were felt to depict an era which was fast becoming history - as the USA rapidly modernized, its homely past dissipated. This edition includes the author's introductory preface, wherein he attributes inspiration for Snow-Bound to his family members. His boyhood, which he describes as a time of isolation from the wider world, was the quintessence of country life; Whittier mentions days out fishing, hunting and traversing the vast wilderness. A surprising success immediately after its release, Snow-Bound did much to elevate its author as a 'Fireside Poet'. Hitherto famous for his support and campaigns for the abolition of slavery, this poem - published soon after the Emancipation Proclamation - represents the beginning of a new phase in Whittier's life. He would spend his remaining years as a celebrated poet, who significantly influenced many American poets and authors. Seller Inventory # APC9781986231053

About this Item: Dodo Press, United Kingdom, 2008. Paperback. Condition: New. Illustrated. Language: English. Brand new Book. John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) was an influential American Quaker poet and ardent advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States. Although he received little formal education, he was an avid reader who studied his father's six books on Quakerism until their teachings became the foundation of his ideology. He was heavily influenced by the doctrines of his religion, particularly its stress on humanitarianism, compassion, and social responsibility. First introduced to poetry by a teacher, Whittier published his first poem in 1826 in William Lloyd Garrison's Newburyport Free Press. In June of 1833, he published the antislavery pamphlet Justice and Expediency, and from there dedicated the next twenty years of his life to the abolitionist cause. He was editor of The National Era; one of the most influential abolitionist newspapers in the North. For the next ten years it featured the best of his writing, both as prose and poetry. His works include: At Sundown (1890), Anti-Slavery Poems, My Summer With Dr. Singletary, Criticism, Historical Papers, Margaret Smith's Journal and The Bridal of Pennacook .
