About this Item: Farrar & Rinehart, [1935]., New York:, 1935. 8vo. [74 pp (unpaginated)]. 30 illustrations. Lavender-coloured cloth, Art Deco silver illust. & lettering on front cover (very slight bumping 1 corner), w/ d.j. cover art by Roy C. Nelson (slight scuffing, very slight chipping head of spine), still a VG/VG copy. First edition (w/o FR, or printing indication on verso) of this scarce anthology of libations from such literary figures as Hemingway, S.S. Van Dine, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Kenneth Roberts, Rockwell Kent, E. Phillips Oppenheim, Theodore Dreiser, and more. This was the first appearance of Hemingway's famed Death in the Afternoon Cocktail which featured a jigger of absinthe, which he recommended 3 to 5 being consumed in an afternoon. Dreiser's American Tragedy cocktail composed of nitroglycerin, gunpowder, gasoline, and a lighted match apparently will cure all that ails you. Nelson (1905-1956) was one of Esquire Magazine's first cartoonists, and caricaturists, drew the daily Mickey Mouse newspaper cartoon strip for Walt Disney Studios, and worked for the Chicago Daily News for over 14 years.
