About this Item: New York: Ace Books D Series 1st Editions and Later Printings 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960 & 1961, 1961. Mass Market Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. Ed Emshwiller, Ed Valigursky, Lou Marchetti, Stanley Meltzoff, Robert Schultz, John Schoenherr, Others (front covers) (illustrator). Later and/or First Printings. ----------This heavy set will require NO additional shipping charges for standard shipping for a US or Canadian order, overseas orders will require a shipping charge DRAMATICALLY LESS than actual postage (inquire). 76 paperbacks, all Ace Science Fiction Doubles, also referred to as tete-beche or dos-a-dos, describing books which when flipped over reveal another cover and book. Ace issued their science fiction doubles from 1953 to 1973 (there were "doubles" beyond 1973, but they bore a single cover which listed both books). The books were issued in 5 letter-prefix series based on original cover price, and 1 numerical series. Offered here is the FIRST letter-prefix series, the "D" series, consisting of 76 volumes issued from 1953 to 1961, and bearing an original cover price of $0.35. It is the COMPLETE set of Ace SF doubles D series, starting with the controversial D-13, to D-517. D-13 is not always included in D series SF double listings, as only one-half the book, Cry Plague! by Theodore S. Drachman, is science fiction (the other half is a mystery, Judas Goat by Leslie Edgley). D-31, containing 2 Van Vogt novels, is often cited as the "first" SF double. In any event, the rare D-13 is included here, and it is in fine condition. The D series consisted of both reprints and first editions, and several authors made their first book appearances here. Notable first book appearances are by Philip K. Dick (Solar Lottery, his first book, and 5 other first editions), Gordon R. Dickson (Alien from Arcturus), Harlan Ellison (his first SF novel and first SF collection in one double, both sides SIGNED by Ellison. The bookseller witnessed the signatures). Other writers made several appearances, both as reprints and first editions, such as A.E. Van Vogt, Andre Norton, Robert Silverberg, John Brunner, E.C. Tubb, Clifford Simak, Robert Moore Williams, Murray Leinster, Poul Anderson, Eric Frank Russell and Brian Aldiss. Condition of the books ranges from VG to unread fine, with most being at least near fine. Very attractive colourful books, with many covers by Ed Emshwiller ("EMSH" hidden in the painting, fun to find) and Ed Valigursky (unsigned but distinctive menacing robots and needle-nosed spaceships). Inquiries on condition or requests for cover scans of individual volumes are welcomed. Seller Inventory # 012133
