About this Item: ont> Vernor and Hood et al. : London, 1798. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. A beautiful example of J G Zimmerman philosophical work, offering a unique social commentary on the society of eighteenth century Europe. Translated from the original Swiss into English. Johann Georg Ritter von Zimmermann was a Swiss philosophical writer, and doctor of medicine. It was during his time working as a doctor that he wrote this particular work. It gained great popularity throughout Europe and saw numerous translations. The overarching theme of the work can be summarised in the preface which states, 'No writer appears more completely convinced than. M. Zimmerman that man is born for society, or feels its duties with more refined sensibilities. ' The belief in the need to engage with society and the significance of solitude is explored intently throughout this work. Posing interesting questions surrounding virtue, and the public verses the private life, this work offer a fascinating insight into the philosophy and society of the 18th century. In an attractive half calf binding, with gilt decoration to the spine. Collated complete, with five plates, two vignettes, an illustrated title page and frontispiece. Condition: In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, raised bands, joints and also to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound.
