Item Description: A. C. McClurg & Company, 1903. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A very good copy of the true first hard cover edition of Du Bois' The Souls of Black Folk: Essays and Sketches, as published by A. C. McClurg & Co. in Chicago, dated 1903 on the title page, with "Published April 18, 1903" on the copyright page. As noted by Partington (1977, p. 192, #2333), a second and third edition were also published by McClurg in 1903. However, such copies are explicitly noted on the title pages as being either the second or third edition. No dust-wrapper, perhaps as issued. This copy bears the ownership signature to the upper-right corner of the front free endpaper of Ida S. Simonson, who in 1901 joined the faculty of the Northern Illinois State Normal School (now Northern Illinois University) and became the first Head of its English Department. In pen to upper-left corner of rear endpaper: p. 75 net, [or it may be: 10.75 net], with a line above the number; else the text is unmarked, pristine. The binding is remarkably solid: there is no splitting of the gutters, and thus no wobble to the boards. The gilt lettering to both the front board and the spine is remarkably bright and fresh in appearance. There is very moderate shelf-wear to the base of the boards, with some slight fraying of the black cloth at the tips. There is a spot of evident fraying of the black cloth at the top of the rear spine seam, with moderate wear at the rest of the crown and the base. Very slight fade to the spine, as from sunning. One small bit of unobtrusive spotting to the base of the front board (really only visible as the book is held at a slant), with very little surface wear elsewhere, considering the age of the book. A stunning first edition copy of one of the truly great works of American literature. [Scans provided are of the front board, the spine, rear board, with digital images of the title and copyright pages. Additional scans available upon request. It is perhaps needless to say it, but this is not an ex-library copy, and it has not been re-backed, rebound, or in any way retouched or repaired.]. Bookseller Inventory # 015293

Item Description: A.C. McClurg, 1903. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. ix, 264, (1) pp. Original unrestored black cloth with gilt lettering. Good with professionally replaced hinges and endpapers, worn and frayed extremities, rubbing along spine, spine lettering rubbed. Repaired tear to half title with a bit of archival mending tissue and a bit of offsetting from removed tape. Text clean with a few dog-ears and fairly light reading wear. Well-traveled and repaired but nonetheless sturdy and not an ex-institutional copy, quite rare thus! One of the most famous works of African Americana, a collection of essays.
