About this Item: South Dakota State Historical Society, Pierre, S. Dak., 1982. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First Edition. No Dust Jacket, As Issued. xvi, 470 pp, letter of transmittal, in memoriam, new life members, report of the president, report of activities, Autobiography of Mary C. Collins, Missionary to the Western Sioux edited by Richmond L. Clow; The Journal of Charles LeRaye: Authentic or Not? by Clyde D. Dollar; South Dakota Spa: A History of the Hot Springs Health Resort, 1882-1915 by Suzanne Julin; Almost Scandinavia: Scandinavian Immigrant Experience in Grant County, 1877-1920 by Elwin E. Rogers; index with b&w illustrations throughout. Compiled by the South Dakota Historical Society and the Board of Cultural Preservation: First Edition, 1983. "Of salient interest to research and historiography is 'The Journal of Charles LeRaye? Authentic or Not' by the late Clyde D. Dollar. Both an autobiographical adventure and a study in the reliability and authenticity of captivity narratives, The LaRaye 'journal' (1801-1805), is a supposed account of the French Canadian Charles LeRaye's capture and journey with a band of Teton Sioux. It's author claims to have preceeded the Lewis and Clark Expedition into the upper Missouri by about three years; to have been the first man to penetrate into the upper Yellowstone region and return with a written account of that area; to have been the first literate white man to see the Sioux, Arikara, and Mandan Indians and write a direct on-the-spot comparative description of the appearance, manners, and customs of all three of these upper Missouri tribes. 'This analysis of the journal is an intensive examination of but one document comprising the past, and the research approach necessarily represents a concentration of attention on a narrow band of history.a probing of a man's mind across time and through distorted intent. In a real sense, the thesis is an example of the historian as detective, searching through the glass, however darkly. And if the rosy-red glow of embarassment discomforts some, we all should take heed: the sources of the past are seldom what they seem to be, and just as rarely what they should be. Charles LeRaye stands as a ghostly monument to what fools the past can make of the present.'" from Clyde Dollar's preface and Introduction. Pristine, no wear. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Green cloth with stamped borders, and gilt lettering to spine. Seller Inventory # 001832

About this Item: State Publishing Company, Pierre, SD, 1910. Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. This publication was in poor condition and has been professionally restored. Where necessary pages have been trimed and edges tipped on. There are new end pages and the book has been rebound in green cloth. There are a number of articles including"A Buffalo Hunt" by Thomas L. Riggs; "Dedication Log School House" by Doane Robinson and "Early Surveys of South Dakota." Of particular interest is the "Reminiscences of John Pattee." Colonel John Pattee wrote his recollections of his military career in the Indian War of 1862-66. Pattee was 40 years old when he enlisted in Company A, Fourteenth Iowa Infantry. He was chosen captain and assigned to duty on the Dakota Frontier. He was mustered out at Sioux City, Iowa in June 1866, with the rank of brevet brigadier general. His experience in those four years fighting the Indians is very interesting and a nice addition to any collection on the Indian wars that took place during the Civil War. Although fragile, this book is a great addition to anyone interested in South Dakota history and the Indian War 1862-1866. Seller Inventory # HB001071

About this Item: State Publishing Company, Pierre, SD, 1918. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. Corners are bumped and rubbed. Wear to the tips of the spine. Front hinge is broken. Overall a fair copy. There are a number of articles in this issue, but "Ending the Outbreak" stands out. Governor Newton Edmunds (South Dakota) took it upon himself to bring the Indian Uprising to an end. In January 1865, he went to Washington, DC and met with President LIncoln. He was able to convince Lincoln that he could bring the Indian outbreak to a close. The subsequent documents and correspondence made it clear that the military and civilian did not agree on the best way to achieve peace. A fascinating article. Peace eventually came and the Indians, increasingly were forced to live on reservations chosen by the white man. Seller Inventory # HB001073
