Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. This publication was in poor condition and has been professionally restored. Where necessary pages have been trimed and edges tipped on. There are new end pages and the book has been rebound in green cloth. There are a number of articles including"A Buffalo Hunt" by Thomas L. Riggs; "Dedication Log School House" by Doane Robinson and "Early Surveys of South Dakota." Of particular interest is the "Reminiscences of John Pattee." Colonel John Pattee wrote his recollections of his military career in the Indian War of 1862-66. Pattee was 40 years old when he enlisted in Company A, Fourteenth Iowa Infantry. He was chosen captain and assigned to duty on the Dakota Frontier. He was mustered out at Sioux City, Iowa in June 1866, with the rank of brevet brigadier general. His experience in those four years fighting the Indians is very interesting and a nice addition to any collection on the Indian wars that took place during the Civil War. Although fragile, this book is a great addition to anyone interested in South Dakota history and the Indian War 1862-1866.
