Published by Hamish Hamilton, London (1957)
Quantity available: 1
From: Ariadne Books, PBFA (Eynsham, Witney, OXON, United Kingdom)
About this Item: Hamish Hamilton, London, 1957. First edition, 1957. Hardback. xiv, 282pp plus illustrations. Red cloth boards with silver titles to spine. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. Shortly after the First World War, Gerald Brenan settled in Yegen, a primitive mountain village in the South of Spain, where he remained for some years. In Yegen, Brenan identified himself with the village and its people, living as simply as they did and learning to understand the character and customs of his neighbours. This book presents a picture of a corner of the world that is not well known. In it we read of such diverse subjects as witches, love philtres, magical rites and ceremonies, courtship and marriage as well as of cave villages, brothels in Almeria, botany and archaeology. All of these things are presented with wit and erudition. He also recounts meetings with local characters as well as accounts of visits to the village by Lytton Stracey, Virginia Woolf, Roger Fry, David Garnett and Ralph Partridge, who all had to face the rigours of a primitve life. Gerald Brenn also wrote "The Face of Spain" and "The Literature of the Spanish Speaking People from Roman Times to the Present Day". 14 illustrations, including a map of Alpujarra. Book in very good condition. Extremities of spine a little rubbed. A little spotting to text block edges. Faint band of toning to endpapers. Main body of text block clean and bright. Dust jacket in good condition. Unclipped. Minor edge wear. Generally a little rubbed and soiled. Spine slightly discoloured. Some light spotting to rear, flaps and internal surfaces. Book.
