Signed by the author, the Sandburgs' daughter, on the front free endpaper for The First Edition Circle, with its bookmark laid in. Helga's father, Carl, and her uncle, Edward Steichen, were Midwestern boys who became world famous, but what was the power her mother had to influence all of them?

Illustrated with 12 gorgeous large photogravures, loose as issued, with tissue guards, in a folding two-piece natural silk folio case. United States: Aperture, 1981. Limited edition, number 315 of 500 printed on heavy Rives BFK paper. Plates are all fine but the outer slipcase is somewhat dust-soiled and has a small 1 inch ink stain on rear cover; inner cloth slipcase is clean but the white board sleeve holding plates is cracked at edges. Fine in a very good case. The images were made by means of the Talbot-klic photogravure process. 11 of the plates were made using the dust-grain technique and one plate using a specially prepared screen. The plates were hand-pulled at Atelier de Taille Douce in Switzerland. Prospectus laid-in.

A stunning production which shows the wide range of his talents and includes portraiture, abstractions and pastoral scenes. A clean and tight near fine copy in cloth boards and with some very faint scattered foxing to the page edges in an about very good example of the scarce tissue jacket that is also foxed and with a number of chips and tears. Lacking the very scarce slipcase. Signed by both Steichen and Sandburg on the limitation page. A very nice copy of this classic. Walter Thompson signed an exclusive contract with Steichen, paying as much as $1000.00 for a single photograph. Edward Jean Steichen, born in Luxembourg was one of the most prolific and influential figures in the history of photography. Signature front cover pastedown, very slight rubbing to spine extremities.

Number 188 of the first 500 copies, a portfolio in original slip case with 12 loose photogravure plates, 5 of which are images of New York, including the iconic Flatiron Building. Steichen's Flatiron reflects his training as a painter; he photographed the building at dusk in winter, from the west side of Madison Square Park. The tree branches in the foreground move the eye down to the rain soaked street, and the outline of a carriage driver. Steichen's image immortalized the Flatiron. Includes three additional ephemeral items: 1. The folding printed prospectus; 2. An invitation to buy letter from Aperture; and 3. An original invoice with purchase price in 1982 of $1250. The texts are written by Beaumont Newhall & Mary Steichen Calderone and are signed by both authors at the text end . No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. In this typed letter signed, Steichen apparently responds to the recipient's desire to know the greatest influence on his life/work. He writes in full: "While I consider your project most interesting and useful, the only contribution I can make to it is to say that my mother had by far the greatest influence on my life. To make this more clear to you I would have to write a book on the subject and I have neither the time or the inclination to do this. I thank you for your interest." Written on an 11" x 8 1/2" sheet of stationery imprinted: "Edward Steichen Topstone Road R.D. 3 West Redding Conn." Edward Steichen (1879-1973) began his career as a fashion photographer (Vogue, Vanity Fair, etc.) and went on to serve as Director of the Naval Aviation Photographic Unit during WWII. From 1947 to 1961 he was the Director of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art. Condition: Mailing folds, otherwise fine condition. Signed by Author(s).
