Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Includes Dust Jacket. Robert Lawson (illustrator). First Edition. First printing of this 1941 Caldecott Medal winner, about Lawson's father and mother and their own parents. "None of them were great or famous, but they were strong and good," says the author in his foreword. This is a beautifully clean copy of the book, with very crisp pages. There is an understated, vintage bookplate on one page, and that same previous owner's name written on another page (both pages otherwise blank, and before the title page, and not jarring); the book is still Near Fine. The dust jacket has no award stickers and the original $1.50 price is intact on the flap. The main flaw to the jacket is the spine and part of the back panel are sunned. But a nice copy nonetheless, and a very good value. Please see photos. Not Signed.

Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Robert Lawson (illustrator). First Edition. (1940). Pictorially stamped buff cloth, small dent to rear board, no writing and no foxing; in a pictorial dust jacket with a slightly sunned spine, professional restoration to rear panel and spine ends, price clipped, no award seal. A beautiful copy of Lawson's very scarce Caldecott Medal winning book about his ancestors. The text and pictures depict black slaves in a way that is completely unacceptable by today's standards; however, his mastery as an artist should not be over-looked. The text, while very simple, still gives the reader a glimpse into American History as experienced by Lawson's family. Size: 4to.

No Binding. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Original etching, "We Fix Flats," on hand-made paper, 6 7/8 x 8 7/8 inches, 1932, signed in pencil "Robert Lawson imp." lower right margin, from an edition of 405. Original mat (lower right corner chipped). A very nice impression. The most famous of all of this artist's etchings was the 1932 Presentation Plate for members of the Society of American Etchers. "The presentation of a print by a well-known American artist-member has been an annual feature of the society's activities since its foundation in 1915," reported The Brooklyn Daily Eagle on November 13, 1932. "One active member of the society is commissioned each year to execute a plate for the associate membership, and following the printing of the required number, the plate is destroyed, so that the etching can be acquired solely by gift to the lay members." It depicts Pegasus being shoed by a band of elves in a forest in the manner of Lawson's illustrations for Arthur Mason's The Wee Men of Ballywooden (1930). "Mr. Lawson is an artist who indulges in the luxury of fantasy despite the practical tenor of our age, but never descends to the merely whimsical. His solid technical accomplishment imbues his fantasies with a strong armature of design and richness of coloring" (New York Evening Post, February 6, 1932). A beautiful copy SIGNED by the author on the bottom of the picture. Signed by Author(s).
