As well as serving in the British Indian Army in the second half of the 19th century, Kenney-Herbert also regularly wrote articles about Indian cookery for local Madras publication. Sweet Dishes can be seen as a companion piece to Kenney -Herbert's previous work, Culinary Jottings for Madras. A fourth, revised edition of this work in which obsolete recipes have been removed, and new ones substituted, and necessary corrections made. Blind stamp to title page from publisher and book shop. 'Higginbotham & Co. Booksellers. Madras and Bangalore'. With publisher's adverts to the front and rear pastedowns. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. A little rubbed to the boards, mainly at the joints. Lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine with some minor wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages. Very Good. book.

Colonel Arthur Robert Kenney-Herbert (1840-1916) was a British soldier who served in the British Indian Army. He wrote regular articles for The Madras Mail and The Daily News on Indian cookery, using the pen name Wyvern. After retiring from the army in 1892 and returning to England, in 1894 he started a cookery school in London: The Common-sense Cookery Association. This, the first edition from 1881, is uncommon.
