Limited issue of only 170 copies SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY HARRY CLARKE. With 24 stunning full page black and white plates by Harry Clarke and with a profusion of very fine Clarke designed head and tail-pieces throughout. Large, thick 4to, in the publisher's best deluxe binding of full vellum, the upper board decorated in gilt from designs by Harry Clarke, the spine gilt lettered, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. 383 pp. A very fine and beautiful copy, still partially unopened, the text bright and the vellum unusually fresh and clean. THE RARE DELUXE EDITION OF ONLY 170 SIGNED AND NUMBERED COPIES. Perhaps the most perfect edition of Edgar Allen Poe's TALES OF MYSTERY AND IMAGINATION. Clarke's stunning black and white plates utilize dramatic wide areas of black with intricate areas of white appearing nearly scratched out. The effect at once conveys both the beauty and horror unique to Poe's writing and evokes the dense spiritual qualities of the exquisite text. A wonderful marriage of artist and writer and "probably the ideal interpreter of Edgar Allan Poe." Limited to 460 Signed Copies. 1935 hardcover, SIGNED by Arthur Rackham, from a limited edition printing of 460 hand-numbered copies, of which 450 were available for sale. Ours is #440. Pages inside are generally clean and unmarked, save for the occasional very light finger smudge in a margin, or the even rarer lone fox spot. Rackham's signature in pen is seen on the limitation page. A good copy of a very rare edition! We ship same or next business day, great customer service! Item Description: London: Published by J. Shiells and Co., 1895., 1895. 8 volumes; complete. A beautiful edition, illustrated with 24 fine photogravures, presented in a very decorative contemporary half dark red calf with two maroon title labels, gilt raised bands and gilt to spines, marbled boards and end papers; top edges gilt, others rough trimmed. Light rubbing to the spine of a couple of volumes; little foxing to page edges. An attractive set in an old leather binding. A seminal figure in the development of science fiction and the detective story, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) exerted a great influence on Dostoyevsky, Conan Doyle, Verne, and Baudelaire. This collection of Poe's best stories contains all the terrifying and bewildering tales that characterize his work, as well as the Gothic horror of 'The Pit and the Pendulum' with other similarly wierd tales, together with all three of the landmark cases featuring his ground-breaking detective Auguste Dupin; the history of the detective story begins with the publication of 'The Murders In the Rue Morgue' (Matthews). He was a writer of genius who was interested in crime, especially violent death, in cryptograms, and the whole process of logical deduction (Quayle). Poe's mystery of 'The Purloined Letter' is a prototype of spy stories like those of James Bond. (Haining) Queen's Quorum (their first Cornerstone title), Eric Quayle; Detective Fiction. Peter Haining; Crime Fiction. Listed in 100 Books That Shaped World History [Raftery, 2002]. Bookseller Inventory # 39124

Item Description: Tudor, New York, 1954. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket Condition: Dust Jacket. HARRY CLARKE (illustrator). First Tudor Edition. Illustrated by Harry Clarke. Black cloth with a gilt stamped title on the spine, and an illustrated paper label mounted to the front cover. Housed in a box with an illustrated paper label on the front. The box is VG indeed, label rubbed and with a slightly soiled lid split at one corner. The book is a fine, bright copy. The D/W is also in fine condition with just a hint of rubbing and fraying in places with a minuscule chip to the top edge of the rear panel. The Arts and Crafts movement spawned a resurgence of Irish art. Harry Clarke created illustrations for Andersen and Poe from 1913 to late 1919. Clarke's eerie, sometimes gruesome illustrations appear throughout as tipped-in colour plates, in addition to numerous smaller black-and-white decorations that recall Aubrey Beardsley. This collection includes many of the tales that earned Poe his reputation as the master of the short horror story, including The Tell-Tale Heart, the Pit and the Pendulum, The Gold-Bug, The Fall of the House of Usher, the Murders of the Rue Morgue and many more. It is hard to find the book with such a nice D/W and still in the original box. Bookseller Inventory # 355490713560

Item Description: New York: Tudor Publishing Co., 1936., 1936. 4to., pp. 412. With colour frontispiece and 31 plates, of which 7 are coloured, all fine but for a small crease to lower corner of frontispiece. Publisher's black cloth with gilt titles to spine and paper label with illustrated title pasted down to upper. In near fine unfaded dust-wrapper, merely a few signs of minor edgewear. A lovely copy. Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [1972]. Book Collector No.271, 'The Great Illustrators'; No.273; 'Amercan Sci-Fi'. Bookseller Inventory # 40743

Item Description: Harrap; London; 1935; 8vo (9 3/4" x 7 1/2"); 318 pages, 1935. VG+/VG+. First Rackham trade edition, first printing. Grey-black woven cloth with gilt stamped Rackham skeleton design and lettering on front cover, gilt stamped Rackham design and lettering on spine, TE tinted black, Rackham endpapers in B&W. With a color frontispiece plus 11 other color illustrations by Rackham (all with tissue guards with illustration titles), 17 other full page pen&ink drawings by Rackham, and many other head piece, tail piece, title page and other illustrations by Rackham. In a 97% complete dust wrapper that has 1/4" chips across top and bottom of spine (not obscuring any printing), 3/4" triangular chip at top of rear panel, 1" x 3/8" chip at top LH corner of front panel, wear and some flaking along the spine folds and flap folds, slight sunning of spine, but still all-in-all a nice copy of the dust wrapper with a wraparound Rackam illustration not in the book. The book itself is clean and bright with no prior owner markings, the front hinge just a bit loose, some rubbing (1/16") to the spine ends and tips, but the covers themselves are crisp with very bright gilt. A favorite and relatively scarce Rackham book (1935 was still during the depression and the price of 21/- (the dust jacket is not price clipped) was above the other trade editions of his books at the time (some as low as 5/-, many others at 15/-, and even the leather gift editions were only 21/5 or 25/-. Today, of course, both Poe and Rackham are highly collectable, and copies of the UK Harrap edition in their dust jackets are very scarce.
