Item Description: George G. Harrap & Company, London, 1935. First signed limited edition of this Arthur Rackham. Quarto, original full vellum, titles and tooling to the spine and front panel, top edge gilt, pictorial endpapers. Illustrations by Arthur Rackham including 12 tipped-in color plates, 17 black & white illustrations. Signed by Arthur Rackham on the limitation page, as issued. In the original publisher's slipcase with printed spine label, one of 460 copies. In near fine condition with a touch of rubbing. Uncommon in this condition and in the original slipcase. The title "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" was first used by The World's Classics and printed by Grant Richard in 1902. The title of this collection was then adopted by Padraic Colum in 1908 in view of the growing reputation of Poe's taste for suspense, especially in the context of what his French critic M. Brunetiere called events "on the margin" of life. The original collection, in keeping with its title, deliberately excluded Poe's poems, comedies and essays. There are twenty-five tales including The Pit and the Pendulum, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Fall of the House of Usher and The Descent into the Maelstrom. Bookseller Inventory # 23045

Item Description: Tudor, New York, 1954. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket Condition: Dust Jacket. HARRY CLARKE (illustrator). First Tudor Edition. Illustrated by Harry Clarke. Black cloth with a gilt stamped title on the spine, and an illustrated paper label mounted to the front cover. Housed in a box with an illustrated paper label on the front. The box is VG indeed, label rubbed and with a slightly soiled lid split at one corner. The book is a fine, bright copy. The D/W is also in fine condition with just a hint of rubbing and fraying in places with a minuscule chip to the top edge of the rear panel. The Arts and Crafts movement spawned a resurgence of Irish art. Harry Clarke created illustrations for Andersen and Poe from 1913 to late 1919. Clarke's eerie, sometimes gruesome illustrations appear throughout as tipped-in colour plates, in addition to numerous smaller black-and-white decorations that recall Aubrey Beardsley. This collection includes many of the tales that earned Poe his reputation as the master of the short horror story, including The Tell-Tale Heart, the Pit and the Pendulum, The Gold-Bug, The Fall of the House of Usher, the Murders of the Rue Morgue and many more. It is hard to find the book with such a nice D/W and still in the original box. Bookseller Inventory # 355490713560

Item Description: Harrap, London, 1935. Pub's Grained Cloth. Book Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Arthur Rackham (illustrator). First Thus. Externally, the dustwrapper is price clipped, and is worn where it folds over the corners of the covers, and is very slightly worn and frayed at the head and foot of the spine panel. Generally, however, this would seem to be an unusually well preserved copy of this very striking wrapper. The cloth binding is of black pebble grained cloth, with gilt lettering to the spine and the upper cover. The upper cover has an embossed panel in blind stamp. The gilt lettering is still very fresh and bright, as is the colouring of the cloth. Internally, there is an inked gift inscription on the front blank prelim. Item Description: Harrap; London; 1935; 8vo (9 3/4" x 7 1/2"); 318 pages, 1935. VG+/VG+. First Rackham trade edition, first printing. Grey-black woven cloth with gilt stamped Rackham skeleton design and lettering on front cover, gilt stamped Rackham design and lettering on spine, TE tinted black, Rackham endpapers in B&W. With a color frontispiece plus 11 other color illustrations by Rackham (all with tissue guards with illustration titles), 17 other full page pen&ink drawings by Rackham, and many other head piece, tail piece, title page and other illustrations by Rackham. In a 97% complete dust wrapper that has 1/4" chips across top and bottom of spine (not obscuring any printing), 3/4" triangular chip at top of rear panel, 1" x 3/8" chip at top LH corner of front panel, wear and some flaking along the spine folds and flap folds, slight sunning of spine, but still all-in-all a nice copy of the dust wrapper with a wraparound Rackam illustration not in the book. The book itself is clean and bright with no prior owner markings, the front hinge just a bit loose, some rubbing (1/16") to the spine ends and tips, but the covers themselves are crisp with very bright gilt. A favorite and relatively scarce Rackham book (1935 was still during the depression and the price of 21/- (the dust jacket is not price clipped) was above the other trade editions of his books at the time (some as low as 5/-, many others at 15/-, and even the leather gift editions were only 21/5 or 25/-. Today, of course, both Poe and Rackham are highly collectable, and copies of the UK Harrap edition in their dust jackets are very scarce.
