Item Description: London: Published by J. Shiells and Co., 1895., 1895. 8 volumes; complete. A beautiful edition, illustrated with 24 fine photogravures, presented in a very decorative contemporary half dark red calf with two maroon title labels, gilt raised bands and gilt to spines, marbled boards and end papers; top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Includes the original printed notice about the care of leatherbound volumes. Light rubbing to the spine of a couple of volumes, first book with a couple of scuffs; minor foxing to page edges. Overall a most attractive set in a vintage leather binding. A seminal figure in the development of science fiction and the detective story, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) exerted a great influence on Dostoyevsky, Conan Doyle, Verne, and Baudelaire. This collection of Poe's best stories contains all the terrifying and bewildering tales that characterize his work, as well as the Gothic horror of 'The Pit and the Pendulum' with other similarly wierd tales, together with all three of the landmark cases featuring his ground-breaking detective Auguste Dupin; the history of the detective story begins with the publication of 'The Murders In the Rue Morgue' (Matthews). He was a writer of genius who was interested in crime, especially violent death, in cryptograms, and the whole process of logical deduction (Quayle). Poe's mystery of 'The Purloined Letter' is a prototype of spy stories like those of James Bond. (Haining) Queen's Quorum (their first Cornerstone title), Eric Quayle; Detective Fiction. Peter Haining; Crime Fiction. Listed in 100 Books That Shaped World History [Raftery, 2002]. Bookseller Inventory # 46528

Item Description: Tudor, New York, 1954. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket Condition: Dust Jacket. HARRY CLARKE (illustrator). First Tudor Edition. Illustrated by Harry Clarke. Black cloth with a gilt stamped title on the spine, and an illustrated paper label mounted to the front cover. Housed in a box with an illustrated paper label on the front. The box is VG indeed, label rubbed and with a slightly soiled lid split at one corner. The book is a fine, bright copy. The D/W is also in fine condition with just a hint of rubbing and fraying in places with a minuscule chip to the top edge of the rear panel. The Arts and Crafts movement spawned a resurgence of Irish art. Harry Clarke created illustrations for Andersen and Poe from 1913 to late 1919. Clarke's eerie, sometimes gruesome illustrations appear throughout as tipped-in colour plates, in addition to numerous smaller black-and-white decorations that recall Aubrey Beardsley. This collection includes many of the tales that earned Poe his reputation as the master of the short horror story, including The Tell-Tale Heart, the Pit and the Pendulum, The Gold-Bug, The Fall of the House of Usher, the Murders of the Rue Morgue and many more. It is hard to find the book with such a nice D/W and still in the original box. Bookseller Inventory # 355490713560

Item Description: London George C. Harrap & Co., Ltd. 1935, 1935. The first edition with Rackham’s illustrations. With 12 very impressive colourplates, each with a captioned guard, pictorial titlepage printed in black and green and 17 full-page line drawings by Arthur Rackham. 4to, in a publisher’s black cloth, lettered and pictorially decorated in gilt on the spine and upper cover with delightfully ghoulish Rackham designs, black and white skeletal endpapers, top edge dyed black, in the SCARCE original dustjacket pictorially decorated in black, white, gray and orange. 318 pp. A very fine copy, and a very bright copy, the jacket in a beautiful state of preservation, trivial spotting to the white paper of the jacket flaps and fore-edge. AN OUTSTANDING COPY OF THIS FIRST EDITION WITH RACKHAM'S VERY IMPRESSIVE ILLUSTRATIONS. There are twenty-five tales including "The Pit and the Pendulum", "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", "The Fall of the House of Usher", and "The Descent into the Maelstrom." The superb drawings evoke the dense spiritual qualities reflected within Poe's exquisite and impassioned writing. A wonderful marriage of artist and writer: Rackham’s illustrations, both horrific and fanciful, bring Poe’s imagination to life, the artist said in illustrating this book that he was beginning to frighten himself. One of our favorite illustrated books. Bookseller Inventory # 27200

Item Description: Harrap, London, 1935. Pub's Grained Cloth. Book Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Arthur Rackham (illustrator). First Thus. Externally, the dustwrapper is price clipped, and is worn where it folds over the corners of the covers, and is very slightly worn and frayed at the head and foot of the spine panel. Generally, however, this would seem to be an unusually well preserved copy of this very striking wrapper. The cloth binding is of black pebble grained cloth, with gilt lettering to the spine and the upper cover. The upper cover has an embossed panel in blind stamp. The gilt lettering is still very fresh and bright, as is the colouring of the cloth. Internally, there is an inked gift inscription on the front blank prelim. Otherwise internally a very fresh and bright copy. The top edge of the text block is slightly dust stained. Size: 4to. Bookseller Inventory # 24481
