Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. This is a rare volume of "The North American Review" (1827, Volume XXV) containing a notice for "TAMERLANE AND OTHER POEMS," the first published work of EDGAR ALLAN POE. 1827; Frederick T. Gray; Boston. The volume contains the July (No. LVI) and October (No. LVII) issues - the issues are consecutive, as they were published quarterly. There is a Contents page for each issue at the front, and an Index at the back. Within the "New Publications / Poetry" section of the October issue is a listing for Poe's "Tamerlane, and other Poems. By a Bostonian. Boston." "Tamerlane and other Poems" (first published in June or July, 1827) was virtually ignored and received no significant critical attention upon its publication. No reviews of the book were written and only a few notices are known, one being the mention within this volume. Founded in Boston in 1815 by journalist Nathan Hale, "The North American Review" was the first literary magazine in the United States. Condition: The front cover has detached (the front end paper is attached to the cover). Name written in old handwriting in pen on the front end paper. The back cover has nearly detached and is holding only by the bottom string. The leather at the top and bottom edges of the spine has chipped away. Wear to the cover corners. The pages are in nice condition with only some occasional mild foxing (though heavy foxing on the title page). Overall the book is in Poor condition due to the covers.

First Edition
Condition: Poor. First Edition. Large 8vo. [6], 491, [1] + "Proposals for publishing by Subscription the Works of George Washington" by Jared Sparks. Waterstains throughout, some of which are ugly (SEE IMAGES) but the paper is strong. Contemporary American sheep, dry and worn, upper joint cracked and just barely holding (SEE IMAGES). A complete copy albeit with significant faults, and priced accordingly. THIS MUNDANE VOLUME IS OF SIGNAL IMPORTANCE IN AMERICAN LITERATURE AS IT CONTAINS ONE OF ONLY TWO STRICTLY CONTEMPORARY ANNOUNCEMENTS OF THE PUBLICATION OF "TAMERLANE, BY A BOSTONIAN," BOTH OF WHICH WERE IGNORED. NO REVIEWS OF "TAMERLANE" WERE EVER WRITTEN, AND AS IS WELL KNOWN THE BOOK FELL INTO UTTER OBSCURITY. NONETHELESS, THESE WERE THE FIRST NOTICES OF EDGAR ALLAN POE AS A WRITER. The announcement in the present publication (Oct. 1827) was preceded by two months in the "United States Reviewe and Literary Gazette" (Aug. 1827). "Tammerlane [.] made practically no impression upon the critical or popular reader. It was noticed by two magazines, but without critical comment" (Arthur Hobson Quinn, Edgar Allan Poe, 1941, pp. 118-128). See also Thomas & Jackson, The Poe Log: A Documentary Life of Edgar Allan Poe, 1809-1849, pp. 82-83. Provenance: John Godfrey (early ink inscription inside front cover).

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Vol. 25 (July-October, 1827). Octavo. [6], 491, [iii, 12]pp., publisher's advertisement and 12 specimen pages at the back. A very good ex-library copy neatly bound in modern brown cloth over boards, spine lettered in gold. Small spine label, the two Contents leaves are bound out of order, a few institutional ink stamps on the modern endpapers and edges of the text block, else no other markings. Contains the second national notice of Edgar Allan Poe's first published work: "Tamerlane, and other Poems. By a Bostonian. Boston." printed in the October 1827 issue. Upon its publication Poe's legendary *Tamerlane and Other Poems* was virtually ignored and received no significant critical attention. It was first listed in the *United States Review and Literary Gazette* for August 1827 as a recent publication, and likewise noted here in the *North American Review* for October 1827. This volume also features long articles on Admiral Krusenstern's voyage around the world; the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad; and Thomas McKenney's Tour to Lake Superior, which includes an account of "the character and customs of the Chippeway Indians".
