Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Issued simultaneously in wrappers and cloth. This is the cloth bound issue, bound in full red cloth with gilt titles. Corners a little bumped and there is some discoloration to the spine heel where the jacket is chipped. Otherwise a fairly tight clean copy. This copy was a Presentation copy signed by the author on July 7th 1959 to the Mystery Writers of America with their stamp on the front endpaper and another to the rear. The binding is tight and strong and the text is clean. There is some offsetting to the endpapers from the jacket flaps. The jacket is only good, with some losses to the spine ends and two corners and some creasing and closed tears. Over 90% complete, the rear white panel is also discolored. Text is in English. Inscribed by Author(s).

Van Gulik drew on cases from the Tang-Yin-Pi-Shih as plot devices for his Judge Dee novels, and his long introductory essay in this publication is one of the earliest Western scholarly treatments of Chinese legal history. The Tang-Yin-Pi-Shih records over 100 legal cases. It was compiled by the Southern Song bureaucrat Gui Wanrong (ca. 11701260) and was widely consulted for hundreds of years. Octavo. With 2 half-tone plates; illustrations and Chinese characters in text. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover panelled in blind with lettering and publisher's emblem in gilt. With dust jacket. Contemporary ownership signature of one J. L. Hoyd on front free endpaper. Spine ends sunned, tips bumped, slight bowing: jacket flaps without price as issued, spine sunned, closed tear and couple of chips, a few old adhesive tape repairs on verso: a very good copy in like jacket.
