Paperback. Condition: New. Deluxe Edition (1st Printing). 226pp. Octavo [20.5cm]. Illustrated wraps. "A deluxe edition of James Baldwin's haunting coming-of-age story, with a new introduction by Roxane Gay and special cover art designed by Baldwin's friend and contemporary Beauford Delaney Originally published in 1953, Go Tell It on the Mountain was James Baldwin's first major work, based in part on his own childhood in Harlem. With lyrical precision, psychological directness, resonating symbolic power, and a rage that is at once unrelenting and compassionate, Baldwin chronicles a fourteen-year-old boy's discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a Pentecostal storefront church in Harlem. Baldwin's rendering of his protagonist's spiritual, sexual, and moral struggle toward self-invention opened new possibilities in the American language and in the way Americans understood themselves." Taschenbuch. Kartoniert. Condition: Gut. Taschenbucherstausgabe. 197 (9) Seiten. 19 cm. Umschlagentwurf: Werner Rebhuhn. Guter Zustand. - James Baldwin (* 2. August 1924 in Harlem, New York City, New York, Vereinigte Staaten; 1. . Aus: wikipedia-James_Baldwin. "The Fire Next Time" is Baldwin's plea in two masterful essays to "end the racial nightmare." Baldwin's novel "If Beale Street Could Talk" is one of his most popular works today. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Dial Press, New York. 1963 (1978). 253 pages. The title page states 1963, however the copyright page states Ninth Printing, 1978. Keep in mind the true first printing was published in 1953 by Alfred Knopf in the USA, and 1954 in the UK by Michael Joseph. So this copy would be the first Dial edition, published in 1963, yet being the ninth printing, it was published in 1978. As for this copy, the book is near fine. Bright, tight and clean. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Pages and endpapers are clean. Navy panels stamped in gilt on spine. Book has two minor flaws keeping it from grading fine: a touch of shelf-rubbing to crown (barely) and minimal, minor scant foxing (very faint) on page edges (barely.) As for the original DJ, it still maintains its $8.95 price on flap. Attractive Guy Fleming designed DJ is bright and attractive with one flaw, soiling along the DJ spine's front edge. A touch on edge of rear flap interior. All flaws noted. A very attractive copy of Baldwin's first book and magnum opus. NF/VG.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Signet Books - New American Library. New York. 1954. 192 pages. Wraps. 25 cents price printed on cover. First softcover edition, first printing. This is the original first paperback edition, first printing stated, with the original classic pulp cover art. Signet changed this cover in later printings. Laid-in is the publisher's original, rare, review slip. Book is about fine with only flaw being a scuff on rear cover near bottom that was touched-up with blue marker, coincidently the same color over the twenty-five cent price printed on front cover and a couple of instances on cover edge. That said, the book is beautiful as there is no readers crease on spine. No writing within. Manufacturer's red page edges are still bright and unfaded. A most attractive first edition, first printing with the highly desirable pulp cover art, with publisher's rare review slip, specific to this copy. James Baldwin's first book, and in 1998, the Modern Library ranked Go Tell It on the Mountain 39th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. Time magazine also included the novel on its list of the 100 best English-language novels released between 1923 and 2005.VG+.
