Jacket looks fantastic in a clear, brodart protector. Ovderall a highly collectible SIGNED copy of the 1959 Grove Press Edition. Rober Frank's Americans ".paved the way for three decades of photographs exploring the personal poetics of lived experience. Many memorable photobooks have been derived from this mass of material. None has been more memorable, more influential, nor more fully realized than Franks's masterpiece."--Parr and Badger, The Photobook: A History, Vol. I . "It was Frank's The Americans that made the photographic book into an artform in its own right. Frank was following a lead set by Morris' book [The Inhabitants] and, especially, by Evans' American Photographs, both of which are designed to let pictures play off each other in a way that controls and reinforces their effect on the viewer. Even Klein's New York book displays this tendency. But Frank's goes much further, creating a denser, richer, deeper structure of images than any book before it."--Colin Westerbeck in Michel Frizot, et. al., The New History of Photography. About this Item: New York: Grove Press, 1959, 1959. Oblong quarto. Original black cloth, titles to spine silver. With dust jacket. An exceptionally bright copy, some very minor offsetting to endpapers and jacket flaps only, a very small chip to jacket at lower fore-corner of rear board, and some insignificant spotting inside verso of jacket, near-fine. Black and white photographs by Frank throughout. First US edition, first printing, entailing the first appearance of Jack Kerouac's poetic introduction constituting his own ode to America. This Grove Press edition is very seldom found in such near-perfect condition, and the jacket so bright. Frank's Les Americains was originally published in France on 15 May 1958 by Robert Delpire as part of its Encyclopédie Essentielle series. In the French edition Frank's photographs were accompanied by text by authors such as Simone de Beauvoir, Erskine Caldwell, William Faulkner, Henry Miller and John Steinbeck. In this edition the photos are not accompanied by that text; Kerouac's controversial introduction instead was added which further cemented Frank's position as bete noir of US photography. Charters B10; Parr & Badger I, p. 247; Roth 101, p. 150. Seller Inventory # 141951

About this Item: Grove Press Inc. New York, 1959. Hardcover. Condition: Poor. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. First Grove Press Edition, 1959, oblong 8vo, black cloth boards, gilt titles to spine. 180pp, of which i-vi are Jack Kerouac's Introduction, the remainder unpaginated. 183 photogravures to rectos, titles on opposite bottom left versos. In this copy, boards and spine are holding securely to 11 front leaves, 12 at rear. The remaining leaves are separate, unbound, complete and in correct order- (i.e. from 'Rodeo, Detroit' to 'Public Park-Cleveland, Ohio').There is a small brown (paint?) stain to the left of the image of 'Savannah, Georgia', which has repeated on previous verso and shows as slight mark to right of image 'Navy Recruiting Station, Post Office-Butte, Montana'and the verso title of same, as well as a faint mark to bottom left of 'Rodeo-Detroit'. Otherwise there is a little consistent age-toning and light marks from handling (nothing significant). Dustwrapper is to a large extent complete, unclipped at $7.50. It has been backed and covered in a crudely-applied transparent adhesive film which would be difficult to remove successfully.Dustwrapper spine browning slightly, a loss to top right of spine, small triangular loss to top edge (above 'E' of 'THE'), small loss bottom right corner, other small nicks and creases and age-toning (please see image). Overall, a far from ideal First Edition copy, but entirely genuine and complete-not beyond professional reconstruction. Seller Inventory # 0011
