Die im Mittelpunkt stehenden Personen sind Entwurzelte; sie stehen zwischen den Kulturen, da ihre Vorfahren sowohl Maori als auch Weiße sind. Entstehung: Das ursprünglich als Kurzgeschichte konzipierte Werk schrieb Hulme zwischen 1966 und 1978. Zunächst fand sich kein Verleger für den Roman, bis er schließlich in einem kleinen feministischen Verlag erscheinen konnte. Erst nach dem großen Erfolg des Buchs brachten es auch namhafte Verlagshäuser in den USA und Europa heraus. Inhalt: Nachdem sie sich mit ihrer Familie überworfen hat, lebt die reiche Künstlerin Kerewin Holmes allein in einem finsteren Turm an einem wilden, unwirtlichen Ort. Eines Tages schleicht sich Simon, Findelkind und einziger Überlebender eines Schiffsunglücks, in ihre Festung ein. Der gewalttätige Junge ist stumm, aber intelligent; niemand weiß, wer seine Eltern waren. Im Dorf ist er als Dieb bekannt; immer wieder besucht er einen als Päderasten verschrienen Alten. Simon wohnt bei Joe, der nach dem Tod seiner Frau allein ist. Mit dem renitenten Kind überfordert, versucht Joe immer wieder, Simon mit brutaler Gewalt zur Anpassung zu zwingen. Auch Kerewins Beziehung zu ihrer Umwelt ist durch Aggressivität und Feindseligkeit geprägt. Kerewin, Simon und Joe gelingt es zunächst, einander näher zukommen. Als Kerewin sich jedoch wieder zurückzieht, kommt es zum Ausbruch mörderischer Gewalt: Im Streit um Kerewins Lieblingsmesser verletzt Joe den Jungen so schwer, dass er ins Koma fällt. Das Ende des Buchs deutet eine mögliche Lösung an: In der Rückbesinnung und Neubelebung von Maori-Weisheiten finden Kerewin und Joe einen Ausweg aus der Spirale der Gewalt. Gemeinsam mit Simon wagen sie einen neuen Versuch zusammenzuleben.
