About this Item: Chatto & Windus, London, 1991. Glossy p/b. Condition: VG-Fine. 1st p/back ed. of 1983 ed?. unpag.prelims + 287 pp.; no internal faults bar hint of edge-browning, presumably common to all copies, covers clean and unworn, faint vertical spine creases caused by opening, so again presumably common to most copies. Originally this title was issued in 1969, but the present edition includes work of later date, or discovered after Bishop's death, so must in that sense be the prefered text. Chatto & Windus published a hard-back ed. in 1983. Apparently scarce in all editions. Note: quoted shipping rates are calculated for 500-700 gram net weight, cost will be modified up or down as appropriate outside this range. Size: 13.5 Cm x 21 Cm. Seller Inventory # 008424

About this Item: Farrar Straus Giroux, 1969. hardcover. Condition: Very Good In Dustjacket. 1st edition. New York. 1969. Farrar Straus Giroux. 1st American Edition. Very Good In Dustjacket. 216 pages. hardcover. Jacket design by Roxanne Cumming. FROM THE PUBLISHER - This volume gathers the poetry - work of three decades - by one of the master poets of the age. In 1955 Elizabeth Bishop was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the combined edition of NORTH & SOUTH and A COLD SPRING, a volume Randall Jarrell called ‘one of the best books an American poet has written.’ In this book NORTH & SOUTH and A COLD SPRING are followed by her subsequent collection, QUESTIONS OF TRAVEL (1965), excepting the story ‘In the Village,’ which Miss Bishop is reserving for a future collection of her fiction. There is a group of translations of two contemporary Brazilian poets, Carlos Drummond de Andrade and João Cabral de Melo Neto. And the book concludes with a group of Miss Bishop’s own distinctive poems, all previously uncollected. ‘Miss Bishop looks at, and into, the world with an eye so individual that to share her vision is – gratefully - to revise one’s own. She is one of the few true poets of this, or any, hemisphere.’ - Philip Booth. ‘Elizabeth Bishop subscribes to no schools or theories, though you might say that she is a school in herself of the schooled diction, the schooled eye. She came upon her way of seeing things years ago. One may talk or not about the, as it were, method - i.e., the organization of off-beat, penetrating insights - but it remains, like all original things, inimitable. The mad exactness of the notation is nearly always both disturbing and exciting because it is so purified, discreet, and vet rash. In a sense she takes no chances and yet by her raffish connections she is of the sort to take every chance. Having one of the least conventional points of view, it is her strength to make the freshness seem inevitable.’ – Jean Garrigue. ‘What Elizabeth Bishop brings to poetry is a new imagination; because of that, she is revolutionary, not ‘experimental.’. Admired by critics, poets, and anyone genuinely interested in writing, her work is not easily labeled. She is not academic, beat, cooked, raw, formal, informal, metrical, syllabic, or what have you. She is a poet pure and simple who has perfect pitch.’ - Howard Moss. inventory #24265. Seller Inventory # z24265

About this Item: Chatto & Windus/Hogarth Press, London, 1983. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Impression. First British Edition (so stated) of the definitive collection, compiling all of Bishop's poems for the first time. Tall, thick 8vo; [12], 287, [1]pp. Publisher's forest green cloth, the spine lettered gilt within a black title block; the pictorial dust jacket (with a watercolor by Bishop) priced 10.95. A tight, square Fine copy (save for a short word blacked out on the front paste down); in a bright, crisp Fine jacket. "[L]ate in life [Bishop] frequently complained that she simply hadn't written enough. She was a meticulous reviser who found it hard to part with a poem, to accept that it was in its final form. Her final volume, Collected Poems 1927-1979, contains only 71 previously published poems, 21 uncollected and occasional poems, 13 written in youth, and 26 translations from Portuguese, French, and Spanish. This small, sturdy, foundation supports the reputation of a literary giant." (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Seller Inventory # BB0790

First Printing (so stated), one of 5500 copies of this collection for which Bishop won the National Book Award for Poetry. About Fine (square and tight, spine ends and tips lightly rubbed) and apparently unread; Near Fine or better jacket, with brief edge wear and short tear with associated wrinkling to bottom of front panel; unusually, spine is all but unfaded. MacMahon A9. In 1955, Bishop was awarded the Pulitzer prize for the combined edition of her first two works, North and South and A Cold Spring. Both are collected here, as well as her subsequent collection, Questions of Travel, and eight new poems and translations from the Portuguese of poems by Carlos Drummond de Andrade and João Cabral de Melo Neto. Late in life, Bishop frequently complained that she hadn't written enough. She was a meticulous reviser who found it hard to part with a poem, to accept that it was in its final form. This collection of her published work to date contains only 65 previously published poems. But she needn't have worried: this small, sturdy, foundation supports the reputation of a literary giant. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Seller Inventory # BB1463
