Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. THE GREAT GATSBY is a 1925 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows a cast of characters living in the fictional town of West Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922. The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion and obsession for the beautiful former debutante Daisy Buchanan. Considered to be Fitzgerald's magnum opus, The Great Gatsby explores themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait of the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream. Fitzgerald-inspired by the parties he had attended while visiting Long Island's north shore-began planning the novel in 1923, desiring to produce, in his words, "something new-something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned." Progress was slow, with Fitzgerald completing his first draft following a move to the French Riviera in 1924. His editor, Maxwell Perkins, felt the book was vague and persuaded the author to revise over the next winter. Fitzgerald was repeatedly ambivalent about the book's title and he considered a variety of alternatives, including titles that referenced the Roman character Trimalchio; the title he was last documented to have desired was Under the Red, White, and Blue. In its first year, the book sold only 20,000 copies. Fitzgerald died in 1940, believing himself to be a failure and his work forgotten. However, the novel experienced a revival during World War II, and became a part of American high school curricula and numerous stage and film adaptations in the following decades. Today, The Great Gatsby is widely considered to be a literary classic and a contender for the title "Great American Novel." In 1998, the Modern Library editorial board voted it the 20th century's best American novel and second best English-language novel of the same time period. Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. The Great Gatsby is a novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows a cast of characters living in the fictional towns of West Egg and East Egg on prosperous Long Island. The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion and obsession with the beautiful former debutante, Daisy Buchanan. Considered to be Fitzgerald's magnum opus, The Great Gatsby explores themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess. The Great Gatsby: May be the most popular classic in modern American fiction. Reverberates with themes at once characteristically American and universally human, which include the importance of honesty, the temptations of wealth, and the struggle to escape the past. It has become an acclaimed masterpiece read and taught throughout the world. Unfolding in nine concise chapters, The Great Gatsby is a tragic love story, a mystery, and a social commentary on American life. About the Author F. Scott Fitzgerald, in full Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, was an American short-story writer and novelist famous for his depictions of the Jazz Age (the 1920s). He was the only son of an unsuccessful, aristocratic father and an energetic, provincial mother. Fitzgerald is considered as one of the pre-eminent authors in the history of American literature. While he achieved popular success, fame, and fortune in his lifetime, he did not receive much critical acclaim until after his death. Perhaps the most notable member of the "Lost Generation" of the 1920s, Fitzgerald is now widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. He finished four novels: This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby, and Tender Is the Night. A fifth, unfinished novel, The Last Tycoon, was published posthumously. Four collections of his short stories as well as 164 short stories in magazines were published during his lifetime. (jacket).

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Peter Ridley; (illustrator). First Printing - First Thus. 144 pp. Trade paperback format. Lightly rubbed on the corners with a flat uncreased spine; no interior markings. Cover by Peter Ridley. Some said he had been a German spy, others that he was related to one of Europe's royal families. Nearly everyone took advantage of his fabulous hospitality. In his Long Island home he gave the most amazing parties, and not the least remarkable thing about them was that few people could recognize their host. This was Ernest Hemingway's favourite work by his friend Scott Fitzgerald. It was also a favourite with movie makers. The first time this was filmed was in 1926, directed by Herbert Brenon and starring Warner Baxter as Jay Gatsby, along with Lois Wilson as Daisy and Neil Hamilton as Nick. Next, it was done in 1949 with an all-star cast, Alan Ladd, Betty Field and Macdonald Carey, along with Ruth Hussey, Barry Sullivan, Howard Da Silva, Shelley Winters, Ed Begley, Elisha Cook and others. Then came the 1974 filming, directed by Jack Clayton and starring Robert Redford, Mia Farrow and Bruce Dern, along with Karen Black, Scott Wilson, Sam Waterston, Howard Da Silva and a host of others. Then in 2000, it was made for TV, directed by Robert Markowitz and starring Toby Stephens, Mira Sorvino and Paul Rudd, et cetera. And finally (or not), it was done again in 2013, directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy, and Tobey Maguire as Nick. Size: 8vo. Book.
