First edition, first issue of Tolkien's classic tale, "among the very highest achievements of children‚ s authors during the 20th century‚ (Carpenter & Pritchard, 530), one of only a handful of presentation copies reserved for Tolkien to give to family members, colleagues and close friends. Octavo, original cloth, cartographic endpapers, frontispiece and 9 full-page uncolored illustrations after drawings by Tolkien. Presentation copy, inscribed by Tolkien on the flyleaf, "Mr. & Mrs. Livesley & Edgar with best wishes from J.R.R. Tolkien." The recipients, the Livesleys and their son Edgar, ran the Kennaway House, a Regency town house in the village of Sidmouth, East Devon which Tolkien used as a summer holiday home and the surrounds of which inspired the landscapes, flora, and fauna of The Shire", the region of Middle-earth inhabited hobbits first introduced in The Hobbit. Situated on the rocky coast of the rustic Devon countryside, the village of Sidmouth has featured in a number of famed literary works, as "Stymouth" in Beatrix Potter's children's story The Tale of Little Pig Robinson (1930), "Idmouth" in¬ Thomas Hardy's Wessex, "Baymouth" in William Makepeace Thackeray's Pendennis, and "Spudmouth" in The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle. English poet Elizabeth Barrett lived in the town from 1832 until 1835. In the final stages of The Hobbit's revisions, Tolkien notably penned a list of special recipients he wished to present copies of the first printing of the book to upon publication, including C.S. Lewis, R.W. Chambers, R.W. Chambers, Simone d‚ Ardenne, George S. Gordon, Elaine Griffiths, his aunts Mabel Mitton and Florence Hadley, and the Livesleys who hosted him at the Kennaway House. Published on September 21, 1937, the first printing of the Hobbit constituted only 1500 copies and completely sold out by December 15th. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom full morocco clamshell box. An exceptional association of the most highly coveted work in fantasy literature. "In enchanted Middle-earth, a small, comfort-loving Hobbit is awakened from his slumbers by a visitor who tells of lost treasure. Before Bilbo Baggins returns home again, he journeys past wizards and elves, talkative trees and treasure-guarding dragons, all swirling in cosmic battle between good and evil. J.R.R. Tolkien's fully realized fantasy world won over generations of children, and dazzled adults with its deft interweaving of medieval legend and made-up languages, maps, and creatures. Tolkien legitimized the modern fantasy genre, and provided the 1960's counterculture with antiwar, back-to-Eden icons" (NYPL Books of the Century 199). ‚ Professor Tolkien‚ s epic of Middle Earth‚ ¶ [is] one of [the twentieth] century‚ s lasting contributions to that borderland of literature between youth and age. There are few such books‚ "Gulliver‚ s Travels, The Pilgrim‚ s Progress, Robinson Crusoe, Don Quixote, Alice in Wonderland, The Wind in the Willows‚ "what else?‚ ¶ [They are] destined to become this century‚ s contribution to that select list of books which continue through the ages to be read by children and adults with almost equal pleasure‚ (Eyre, 67, 134-5). All historians of children‚ s literature‚ ¶ agree in placing [The Hobbit] among the very highest achievements of children‚ s authors during the 20th century‚ (Carpenter & Prichard, 254, 530). Published on September 21, 1937 in a first printing of only 1500 copies, The Hobbit had completely sold out by December 15. ‚ It may have been a surprise to its publishers that a work as sui generis as The Hobbit should have been a popular success, but once it was a success there can have been no surprise in the clamor for a sequel. Tolkien had opened up a new imaginative continent, and the cry now was to see more of it‚ (Shippey, 49).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. JRR Tolkien (illustrator). 1st Edition. First Printing of the First Edition. The finest copy I have seen in 30 years of dealing in JRR Tolkien related books. All issue points as required in the Hammond and Anderson descriptive bibliography. The book is fine, looks unread, no spine lean, it is clean with no internal marks and none of the usual spotting. The wrapper is near fine with no loss or chipping with just some slight darkening to the spine. Please see the photographs. The internal photos of the wrapper show this has been on the book for 85 years and virtually untouched (offsetting matches perfectly). Looks unrestored. This book is believed to have been kept in the USA west coast where conditions are dry, hence no evidence of spotting. This copy is believed to have come from the estate of a wealthy collector. I also have a fine/fine set of UK 1st printings Lord of the Rings coming soon and Lord of the Rings related unpublished lengthy letter. Please contact me for more photographs and information.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Allen and Unwin 1942. 1st, 3rd printing. In original condition, no restoration. If you see other copies too good to be true, it is too good to be true! Some number of these were damage in a warehouse fire during the WWII. So few were seen with dust jackets it was thought they were printed without. Arguably more scarce than a 1st/1st. These were cheaply printed, especially the dust jacket. Few survive in any condition, even if looked after. Book is near fine, remarkable so. Printed on wartime paper so the dust jacket appears over-sized. Slight scuffing to cloth corners is the only flaw. Complete, original dust jacket, no restoration, but worse for wear. If you have collected older Hobbits, you'll know the paper is very brittle, chips easy (especially on the folds) and even very careful handling leads to tattering and breakage. The jacket spine colours are subject to discoloration due to damp, not sun. The jacket is all one piece, but the lower one 1 1/2 inch section of the spine is particularly brittle and a number of small pieces are held together with acid free archival tape as per the reverse photo. Acid free tape has been used to support other weakened areas, but it is all the original dust jacket. First editions now sell for £100,000 plus. Few first edition of any printing have come on the market in the least two years. See all our Hobbits listed. The first edition Hobbits have the original text which was altered for the second edition 1954 to bring it in-line with the soon to be released The Lord of the Rings. Chapter 5 in particular was changed as was various names, use of words etc. Goblins became Orcs. Professor Tolkien continue to make changes and improvements to his other books with each printing, even into the 3rd printings of both he refined the text.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Allen and Unwin 1946 1st, 4th printing, last printing of the first edition. In amazing condition wit NO restoration whatsoever. Print quantities were 1500 each printing so very rare. These were cheaply printed, especially the dust jacket. Few first editions of any printing survive in any condition, even if looked after. For some reason in the 20 some years we've been a specialist Tolkien dealer, a few examples of the 4th printing remain in fine condition and jacket? Perhaps stored with the publisher and never sold, employees copies possibly? This is one of them, truly outstanding condition. Book is near fine, remarkable so. Printed on wartime paper so the dust jacket appears over-sized. a few tiny foxing spots to page edges, but not on pages. Slight scuffing to cloth corners edges is the only flaw. Complete, original dust jacket, no restoration, slight darkening of white on the spine and mountains on the cover, otherwise near fine overall. First editions now sell for £100,000 plus. Few first edition of any printing have come on the market in the least two years. See all our Hobbits listed. Please ask for photos which will give you a better idea of the condition. Hardcover. First Edition; Third Printing. The book is bound in the publisher's original green cloth covers with black titles and decoration in a facsimile jacket. Presenting very well this is a nice clean copy with minimal signs of age or wear. A few light fox marks, very good. To go into great detail: the corners have softened just a touch and the spine tips have a couple of very tiny bumps and some soiling. Internally the book is again superb, all original with no restoration. Owner ink stamp to the second page. The book sits nice and square with some mild foxing to the first few leaves and occasionally through the book generally consistent with a book of this age. A little foxing to text block. Overall a real beauty. The first printing of The Hobbit was issued on 21st September 1937 with a print run of only 1500 copies. The book was an immediate success and sold out within months. This second impression was printed in December the same year in an edition of 2300 copies (423 of which were destroyed at the warehouse of the binder Key and Whiting in the bombing of London on November 7th 1940) and was the first printing to include the author's one colour plate, initially commissioned for and later published in the American edition. [Hammond A3a. ] An absolute collector's gem and as rare as the First and second Printing. In late 1942, Allen & Unwin printed 1,500 copies of a third impression under their imprint. ; All domestic orders shipped protected in a Box.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION SECOND IMPRESSION AND THE FIRST WITH COLOR PLATES. 1 vol., 7-1/2" x 5-1/2", 5 plates (4 colour), 8 illustrations by the author, advertisement leaf at end, bound in full dark green morocco, ribbed gilt decorated spine, covers ruled in gilt, Smaug the dragon gilt to lower right corner of the front cover, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled pastedowns and endpapers, original cloth covers and spine bound in rear, original front map pastedown and endpaper bound in the front, map pastedown only bound in the rear, by Bayntun, IN AS NEW CONDITION. Published in the same year as the first and the first edition to include colour plates. Tolkien began writing The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, as a Professor of English Language and Literature at Oxford University. Tolkien's creative perspective was born from a childhood spent briefly in South Africa and then rural England, a short but wretched tour during World War I, and an avid fascination with German philology. Although it was originally billed as a children's book, The Hobbit attracted a varied audience and has been wildly popular since its initial publication. Tolkien built upon the tradition of fantasy literature developed by George MacDonald, Lewis Carroll, and the folk tales of Arabian Nights by inventing a new language?Elvish?and making it accessible for modern-day readers. Such creativity brought rave reviews for The Hobbit, which sold out of its original print run of 1,500 copies three months after publication.

Library labeling etched into cloth on spine, otherwise minimal labeling. Lacking the illustrated endpapers. All color plates present, clean and vibrant. Minor dust wear to boards, general shelf/reading wear. Spine somewhat faded. Pages/boards clean, binding sturdy. Feel free to ask for photos!.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien. London: George Allen & Unwin, 1942 first UK edition third impression. Colour frontispiece and black & white illustrations to text, bookplate to half-title largely removed with paper remains and ownership signature of James Laybourne in a juvenile hand inscribed beneath, old light damp stain to upper blank margin of frontispiece, original decorative green cloth, rubbed, spine slightly darkened and frayed along joints and at ends, a little edge and corner wear. Released in a very small printing of 1500 copies, and is therefore along with the first and second printings highly sought after. This printing is the first one that used the colour frontispiece. First deluxe edition of Tolkien's first novel. Octavo, original publisher's black pictorial cloth depicting illustrative vignette of Smaug to the front cover in gilt, silver and red, cartographic endpapers, frontispiece and 9 full-page uncolored illustrations after drawings by Tolkien. In near fine condition.

It is also the second edition in Sweden which makes it an incredible collectible. The condition on this one is fantastic. Overall fantastic condition. Some wear to the sides. I could find a faint dog-eared page and som small stains which is shown in the pictures. Slight forward lean. The front board is a little bit further to the right then the backboard. However this is not much but by a little. Not noticeable when reading. The book colors hasnt changed which is very rare on this book. In overall beautiful condition.
