Book Description: John Ballantyne,, Edinburgh:, 1810. Book Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 4to, pp. 290, cxxix. Copious notes. Frontis portrait. Off-setting to the title-page from the portrait, some contemporary notes on the verso to the half-title. Bound in contemporary full calf (covers separate and first signature separate, amorial bookplate). The interior is nice and clean with wide margins. Tinker 1865; The Lady of the Lake marked the height of Scott's popularity as a poet. 25,000 copies sold in eight months, it broke all records for the sale of poetry, and Scott's fame spread beyond Great Britain to the United States. In the Edinburgh Review, Francis Jeffrey felt it far exceeded its predecessors: the story was 'constructed with infinitely more skill and address' and there was 'a larger variety of characters, more artfully and judiciously contrasted' The poem is considered by critics to be "the most interesting, romantic, picturesque, and graceful" of Scott's works, as well as the most read (Thomson); it is a perfect guide-book to the fairy scene of the Trosachs and Loch Katrine in the Western Highlands of Perthshire. Book Description: Edinburgh - John Ballantyne and Co, 1809. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. First edition. A remarkablefirst edition of this narrativepoem of the Scottish Highlands that made Sir Walter Scott's name. Bound in is the first edition of Thomas Campbell's Gertrude of Wyoming: A Pennsylvanian Tale and Other Poems from 1809, printed in London forLongman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme. Features a portrait frontispiece Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. The Lady of the Lake is set in the Trossachs region of Scotland. It is composed of six cantos, each of which concerns the action of a single day. The poem has three main plots: the contest among three men, Roderick Dhu, James Fitz-James, and Malcolm Graeme, to win the love of Ellen Douglas; the feud and reconciliation of King James V of Scotland and James Douglas; and a war between the lowland Scots (led by James V) and the highland clans (led by Roderick Dhu of Clan Alpine). The poem was tremendously influential in the nineteenth century, and inspired the Highland Revival. Portions of the German translation of this work were set to music by Franz Schubert. Gertrude of Wyoming; A Pennsylvanian Tale (1809) is a romantic epic in Spenserian stanza composed by Scottish poet Thomas Campbell (1777-1844). The poem was well received, but not a financial success for its author. The setting of the poem is the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania and the massacre that occurred there on July 3, 1778. On that day, more than three hundred American Revolutionaries died at the hands of Loyalists and their Iroquois allies. Condition: In a full mottled calf binding. Externally, a trifle rubbed. The front joint is cracked. Internally, generallyfirmly bound, although just the first few gatherings are beginning to work loose. Generally bright and clean throughout with just a few scattered spots and handling marks and one or two age-toned pages. There is a burn mark to the corner of the frontis, not affecting the image. Small copperplate ink signatures to both titles. There is some spotting and an ink stain to the textblock edge, not affecting the pages. Overall: VERY GOOD. Bookseller Inventory # 015427
