Seller: George Bayntun ABA ILAB PBFA, Bath, United Kingdom
Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Lucius Hitchcock (illustrator). First UK Edition. With a frontispiece by Lucius Hitchcock. First UK edition. 8vo. Newly bound by Bayntun-Riviere in full crimson morocco, the covers with a gilt fillet border, the spine lettered and dated in gilt with one line panels and tooled bands, hand-marbled endleaves, gilt edges. Original cover bound in.
Illustrated. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1900. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with front cover monogram device in gilt. First Edition, first issue. The title story, one of Twain's darker themes, is "a parable about a smug all-American town whose citizens, never having been tempted, take pride in their honesty. A stranger sets in motion a test of their honor, and they fail" [MacDonnell]. The first issue, as here, has sheets bulking 1-1/16 inch and has "[page 2" on the plate facing page 2. Condition is fine except for one little nick in the rear cover fore-edge; there is scarcely any of the fading of the spine that is typical for these red turn-of-the-century Twain titles. There is an endpaper signature dated August 1900, two months after publication -- in Des Moines, tying in with the ears of corn in the binding monogram. This first edition (bearing the date 1900 on the FRONT of the title leaf) is curiously scarce. McBride p. 200; Blanck 3459.
Original Wraps. First appearance in print of the above titles, some unbound, some in wrappers, mostly octavo; all housed together in an attractive green quarter-leather slipcase with chemise. Including: (1) To the Person Sitting in Darkness, in The North American Review, No. DXXXI, Feb., 1901. First published edition, 8vo, pp. 161-176; stapled, unbound. (2) A Dog's Tale. Illustrated, in Harper's Monthly Magazine, Dec. 1903, pp 11-19; 8vo, stapled, brown paper wraps. First appearance in print. (3) The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg, in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Dec. 1899, pp. 29-54; 8vo, staples, brown paper wraps. First appearance in print. (4) A Double-barreled Detective Story, in Harper's Monthly Magazine, part I, Jan. 1902 pp 256-270; part II, Feb. 1902, pp. 429-441. First appearance in print. (5) English as She is Taught, taken from Century Magazine, 1887, pp. 932-936, stapled, unbound. First appearance in print. In all 24 items by Twain or about Twain. Complete descriptions are available upon request.
