In maroon cloth with decorative gilt lettering to spines and decorative gilt vignette to fronts. In very good conditions. Some slight fading to spines, some minor rubbing to corners and ends of spines. Some light handling marks to cloths on boards. Endpapers clean, no penned inscriptions. Inside pages all very clean and bright throughout. Page edges rough cut. Else a very clean and tight set. (Second Oxford Edition, being the First Regular Edition, proceeded by the ?Large Paper Edition? in 1923. Vol. I, [4] + xiv + [2] + 429 + [1] pp. I.; Vol. II, xiil + [1] + 415 + [1] pp.; Vol. III, xii + [2] + 567 + [1] pp.; Vol. IV, xi + [iii] +521 + [2] pp.; Vol. V, xiii + [i] + 252 + 310 + [2] pp., including Addenda (the 2 titles separately paginated). Vols. I-IV also include 3 separate reproduction title pages of original editions (in the case of Vol. III, 4 title pages, one for first and 3 for second editions) and for Vol. V, the 4 separate title pages of the original 1818 joint edition. Bound in original red half morocco, gilt, over red cloth; spine in compartments with raised bands and gilt borders and titles. All edges gilt. Binder's stamp of Bumpus on rear pastedown. Slight traces of wear to extremities but otherwise a fine set. Illustrated by 42 pages of plates, including frontispieces, and by reproductions of title pages. The five volume set produced by the Oxford University Press, is one of the best editions of the novels of Jane Austin ever issued. The inclusion of reproductions of the original title-pages to the first editions, together with the scholarly notes, appendices and indexes, and the carefully chosen contemporary illustrations complement the definitive text. A revised version of the 1923 Oxford edition edited by Robert William Chapman, scholar and editor (1881-1960), with unacknowledged assistance from his wife. Chapman became Secretary of the Clarendon Press and later edited the letters of Samuel Johnson. A near fine set of the 1st Oxford edition of Jane Austen's Novels, in the large paper version - limited to 1,000 sets of which 950 were for sale. The set consists of 5 volumes (Northanger Abbey and Persuasion are in one volume) with detailed notes, additional information and numerous illustrations. This set has been recently rebound by Elizabeth Howard - with pale blue calf spines (with title labels) and corners and matching marbled boards. New endpapers. Page edges to side and base untrimmed. Each volume has a colour frontispiece: in the case of Mansfield Park, this has an additional flap to give 2 different views of the same scene; and in Vol V there is a colour frontispiece for both books. All other illustrations are present as called for. Sense and Sensibility 429pp; Pride and Prejudice 415pp; Mansfield Park 567pp; Emma 521pp; Northanger Abbey 252pp; Persuasion 263pp. There is the very occasional spot, for example on the verso of the street plan of Bath at the end of Vol V, but otherwise contents very clean.
