About this Item: John Grant. Edinburgh, 1924. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 12 volume (complete) set with brown leather spines and leather corners. Brown cloth over boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Bindings are signed Riviere & Son on the blank side of the marbled endpaper. The spines have raised cords and gold lettering. Leather is dry and shows some wear. The hinges show wear as well, although only 2 boards are detached. Both are present. The contents are: Villette in 2 volumes. Wuthering Heights. Spine flap loose and one cover detached. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall in 2 volumes. Jane Eyre in 2 volumes. One cover detached. Shirley in 2 volumes. Agnes Gray, The Professor and Life of Charlotte Bronte in one volume each. Each book measures 5.5 x 8.5 inches. The set takes up 18 inches in the shelf. As far as bindings go, it's only about a C+ (and I'm a harsh grader) and all the pieces are here. The Thornton Edition - a complete set of 12 volumes. ***Each of the volumes is in very good condition in green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and decoration. Top edges gilt. Fore-edges rough-cut. Boards and gilt fresh and clean. Just some slight rubbing to the cloth and gilt on some volumes, where the dustwrappers have got chipped. Corners sharp. Spines tight. ***Each volume has the contemporary ownership inscription in ink as follows 'Winifred Cureton, "Brookhurst", Hale, Ches.' Pages clean and bright, with just some light foxing to the page edges and preliminary pages. Printed on thick quality paper. The books have been really well preserved by the dustwrappers. ***Each of the volumes retains the original plain printed dustwrapper, all of which are largely complete. Dustwrappers all have slight marking and creasing at the edges commensurate with their age.
