It was rewritten and published as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) in 1865 with illustrations by Sir John Tenniel. The Nursery "Alice" was first published in 1890, 25 years after the original Alice. Rewritten by Carroll, it included 20 of Tenniel's original illustrations enlarged and coloured, and was the first colour edition of any Alice book. It also featured a new cover illustrated by E. Gertrude Thomson. Seller Inventory # LIE9781907960000

'Containing twenty coloured enlargements from Tenniel's Illustrations.' Paper covered boards are illustrated in colour and are somewhat rubbed and bumped. There is a slight lean on the spine. A better copy than this recitation of its faults suggests. Size: Quarto. Category: Children; Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Seller Inventory # 57145

Illustrated boards with cloth spine, edge & corner wear, cover soil, lacks FFEP, first two pages with creasing, pg. 48 with marginal chip that effects one word, soil at page edges. Originally suggested to his publisher in 1881, the work was not printed until 1889. When Carroll saw the first run of 10,000 copies he was dissatisfied with the quality of the printing and cancelled the order, though he thought it might appeal to the American market, so 4,000 copies were sent overseas and a new title page was created, replacing "London" with "New York" and dated 1890 without price. Illustrated with enlarged plates from Tenniels original drawings, here printed in color. A new cover was created by E. Gertrude Thomson. The text was adapted by Carroll to appeal to a younger audience. According to Lovett & Lovett Catalog 8 Item #18, this is the true first edition, American Issue. First Edition points: printed on toned paper and Alice's profile is visible on pg. 34. Size: Small 4to. Seller Inventory # 002603

About this Item: London: Macmillan and Co. 1889, 1889. Quarto. Original white cloth-backed pictorial boards, titles to front cover in red and black, orange endpapers. Wear to corners and head and foot of spine, spine darkened, some light foxing to preliminaries, some internal finger marks, diagonal crease to page 36. Mechanical enlargements of 20 of John Tenniel's illustrations, enlarged from the originals and printed in colour; text printed in brown ink. Cover illustrations by E. G. Thomson. First edition, first impression, third issue, with the original illustration of Alice and the Cheshire Cat on page 34 with Alice's profile visible, overpriced with two shillings on the title page. Genuinely rare thus: copies are overwhelmingly met in the second edition. Ten thousand copies of the first print run were printed by Edward Evans on toned paper. Dodgson rejected the entire edition in sheets as the pictures were "far too bright and gaudy" and instructed they should be reprinted. The casings prepared had Alice asleep beneath a tree on the front cover and a picture of the March Hare on the back. Four thousand copies of the rejected sheets were sent to the United States and the book was published with a tipped-in preliminary leaf and title page dated 1890. After the publication of the second edition in 1891, unsold copies of the first edition were bound up and overprinted "People's Edition, Price Two Shillings" at the head of the title page, but not redated, as in this copy. About this Item: London: Macmillan and Co., 1889 [1891], 1891. Tall octavo. Original cream cloth-backed cream glazed pictorial boards, title to front cover red and black. A little wear to extremities, light foxing to endpapers, boards toned and slightly soiled, a minor loss to lower fore corner; a very good copy. Colour frontispiece with tissue-guard, 19 colour illustrations after John Tenniel. First edition, second issue ("The People's edition"), priced at two shillings on the title page. The original printing of this condensed version of Alice for younger readers was discarded by Dodgson in much the same way as its 1865 predecessor. Dodgson rejected the entire first edition of 10,000 copies in 1889, which was printed on toned paper, on the grounds that the pictures were "far too bright and gaudy". The first 4,000 rejected sheets were sent to America for publication under the imprint of Macmillan & Co. of New York, and a second edition of 10,000 copies was prepared for the UK in 1890. The most notable alteration in the second editions was the printing of the sheets on white rather than toned paper and the altered illustration of Alice and the Cheshire Cat on p. 34, removing Alice's profile. After the publication of the second edition, the remainder of the first printing sheets, retaining the original illustration of Alice and the Cheshire Cat on p. 34, were bound up to form the "People's Edition" of 1891, priced at two shillings, as in this copy. In 1896 copies of this issue were withdrawn from sale and offered to hospitals. Uncommon thus, with only five copies traced at auction: copies are overwhelmingly met in the second edition. About this Item: London, Macmillan and Co. 1889, 1889. 4to (200 x 260mm, 7 3/4 x 10ins) in an Unrecorded Variant Binding, cream boards with The Nursery Alice, and Tenniel's illustration of Alice in The Shower of Cards (appearing at p55 in this edition), all printed in red and black, blank back cover, and not the usual printed top cover of Alice asleep beneath a tree, with the March Hare on the back cover by E. Gertrude Thomson, carefully rebacked reusing much of the original plain paper backstrip, moderately worn at edges. Printed throughout in brown on cream paper (Carroll called this "Tinted"). Collation is as Williams, Madan, Green, Lewis Carroll Handbook 215 (185), white end papers now a bit discoloured, no mention of "Peoples Edition", but title-page with Price Three Shillings decoratively and lightly overstamped, and Price One Shilling in italics above in slightly different ink, thus the content is closest to Williams' variant 185e. First Edition. Carroll was extraordinarily protective of the illustrations to all his works, and had repeated and persistent problems over many issues and editions with the illustrators themselves, his publishers and printers. Getting hold of 14 negatives for Alice's Adventures Underground from an unreliable zincographer "needed a legal summons and Dodgson's personal appearance in the witness box to extract (them) " (Williams 194, 158). At first sight he found The Nursery Alice too gaudy, and these "imperfections of printing" caused the price to be cut until the defective stock could be sold off and replaced with better printed copies at the original, higher price. Some 500 copies of remaining stock were sold to America, where the colour printing was then deemed too dull. Many were given away to children's hospitals and institutions. Williams had seen "all sorts of variants" of the title-page, but apart from one with the March Hare not being central, and one with a blank back, he nowhere mentions use of this Tenniel illustration on the front cover, and I have been unable to locate another similarly bound copy. The First Alice with Coloured Illustrations, Adapted and Closely Supervised by Carroll Himself, in an Unrecorded Variant Binding. Seller Inventory # 20033

About this Item: London: Macmillan and Co., 1890, 1890. Small quarto. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark green morocco, titles to spine gilt, pictorial onlay of the mad-hatter's tea party with oval surround gilt, inner dentelles gilt, floral endpapers, gilt edges. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent copy in a fine binding. Contains 20 coloured enlargements from Tenniel's illustrations to "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland". First published edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "Maggie Bowman from the Author. Mar. 31 1890". Dodgson took charge of Maggie Bowman during her stay in Oxford to act in Bootle's Baby (9 to 13 June 1889), and commemorated this event in his poem "Maggie's Visit to Oxford". Her older sister, Isa Bowman, who at that time was one of Dodgson's "chiefest" child friends, played the part of Alice in the revival of Savile Clarke's dream play which opened at the Globe Theatre on 26 December 1888. In fact, this production introduced all five of the Bowman children to the stage, and the girls later became professional actresses. The first printing of this abridged version of Alice was discarded by Dodgson in much the same way as its 1865 predecessor. Five hundred copies were sent for issue in the USA but even these were apparently destroyed. This 1890 printing exists in at least three states, the present example being the earliest, with "Price Four Shillings" on the title page. Williams, Madan and Green 216. Seller Inventory # 98292
