About this Item: E. Harding London, 1798. 12mo, 7"x4" (18.5x11cm). "To which is Prefixed an Account of the Manner in which the Said Manuscript was Discovered, in a Letter from an English Gentleman now Residing in China to the Earl of E****." Printed by T. Rickaby for E. Harding of Pall-Mall; a later edition of one of the most popular texts of the 18th century, with numerous stipple-engraved in-text illustrations. pp(2)/1-14,19-22,15-18;(2),1-120/(2) including advertisement leaf following title-page, publisher's list (pages 117-120), and single blank preliminary & final leaves. Introduction (pages 19-22) precedes instead of follows subsidiary title & 'contents' pages (pages 15-18) in section before main text. Edges of text-block red-speckled. Near-contemporary half calf with marbled paper-covered boards, spine titled & decorated in gilt; original endpapers. Spine rubbed & chipped, with loss at head & foot. Boards a little rubbed at edges, a little worn at corners, and detached - the rear together with flyleaf. Front endpapers cleanly split at hinge, flyleaf attached to book-block. Both front & rear endpapers lightly spotted, and a little adhesive-stained at corners; front flyleaf also a little dust- & handling-marked, and rear flyleaf creased. Blank preliminary leaf spotted and dust- & handling-marked, blank final leaf lightly & sparsely spotted. Title-page faintly toned, and lightly dust-marked towards fore-edge. Two consecutive leaves - pages 3-6 of main text - with quite widely spaced tan stains in form of dots, a few spots, and trail of length 3cm and width up to 5mm, slightly affecting illustrations on pages 3 & 5. Contents otherwise faintly toned, with occasional light & sparse spotting and isolated spots, mainly light dust- or handling-marks, and minor offsetting from illustrations, as well as a few lightly creased corners and corner tips. Top edge of text-block dust-darkened, other edges toned and a little dust- & handling-marked. Binding requiring repair only; contents complete, and generally clean & tight. FAIR copy.
