About this Item: Signed by Gregorio Fuentes (1897-2002). Best known to the angling community as the guide to Ernest Hemingway while he captained the Pilar from the late 1930s until 1961, when Hemingway died by suicide, Gregorio Fuentes led an amazing life, prior to and during his time with the famed author. Meeting for the first time in 1928, it was a decade later that Hemingway sought out Fuentes to work on the newly built Pilar, first as a mate, and ultimately as the Captain, which incidentally was willed to Fuentes by Hemingway, but "appropriated" by the Cuban government during the revolution before he could take ownership. There are a good number of folks who regard Gregorio as the basis for the character Santiago in Hemingway's novel the The Old Man and the Sea, and a good number who don't - Hemingway stated the character "was based on no one in particular". You can draw your own conclusions on that one. The signed illustrated magazine leaf under glass measures 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 within an Ash frame of 10 1/2 x 12 1/2. Capt. Greg Poland, a former FBI Agent who made a decision years ago to pursue a career as a fishing guide in pursuit of Florida's salt water game fish rather than chase bad folks, visited with Gregorio Fuentes in 1997. There is a photograph of Fuentes and Poland together, attached to reverse of the frame showing Mr. Fuentes signing this illustration - Hemingway, the Pilar, and Fuentes. In fine condition. Signed by Pilar Captain. Seller Inventory # 010318

About this Item: Scribner's, New York, 1952. Later printing (1958). A very good copy bound in finely woven blue cloth stamped brightly in silver on the spine with no flecking to the lettering. With rubbing and light wear to the extremities. This copy was published in 1958. A newspaper photo of Ernest and Mary Welsh Hemingway has been glued onto the second free endpaper and dated July 3, 1961, creating some offsetting. In a later dust jacket with the price of $3.00 and with the notice of the Pulitzer Prize at the top of the front flap. Heavy chipping and small pieces missing at the top of the spine ends and at the corners. This copy is inscribed in black ink on the front endpaper: "For Karen from her friend Ernest Hemingway." And dated: "Tucson 20 March '59" by the recipient. The recipient was Waldo Pierce's daughter, Karen, who has written a letter of provenance dated Sept. 6, 2007: "When I was 10 years old, Ernest Hemingway came to our house in Tucson, Arizona, to visit my father, Waldo Peirce. He signed a book for everyone in the family, and I got The Old Man and the Sea. Karen Peirce." Waldo Peirce (1884 1970) was an American painter, born in Bangor, Maine. Peirce was both a prominent painter and a well-known character. He was sometimes called "the American Renoir". A long-time friend of Ernest Hemingway, of whom he painted the cover picture for Time magazine in 1937, he was once called "the Ernest Hemingway of American painters." To which he replied, "They'll never call Ernest Hemingway the Waldo Peirce of American writers." In a letter written in the mid-1930s, Ernest Hemingway described a visit by Peirce to his home in Key West, Florida: "Waldo is here with his kids like untrained hyenas and him as domesticated as a cow. Lives only for the children and with the time he puts on them they should have good manners and be well trained, but instead they never obey, destroy everything, don't even answer when spoken to, and he is like an old hen with a litter of ape hyenas. I doubt if he will go out in the boat while he is here. Can't leave the children. They have a nurse and a housekeeper too, but he is only really happy when trying to paint with one setting fire to his beard and the other rubbing mashed potato into his canvasses. That represents fatherhood." (Wikipedia). Seller Inventory # 283

About this Item: Charles Scribner's & Sons, New York, 1952. First edition, early printing of Hemingway's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and one of his most famous works. Octavo, original blue cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by Ernest Hemingway on the half-title page in the year he received the Nobel Prize in Literature, "For Adele Ervin with sincere good wishes Ernest Hemingway Finca Vigia 1954." Finca Vigia was Hemingway's home in the San Francisco de Paula Ward in Havana, Cuba. He purchased the property in 1940 at the request of his third wife Martha Gellhorn who had become tired of the small room he was renting at the Hotel Ambos Mundos. It was at Finca Vigia that Hemingway wrote much of For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea in its entirety. Near fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional example, most rare and desirable signed and inscribed. Written in Cuba in 1951 and published the following year, The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and cited by the Nobel Committee as as contributing to their awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway in 1954. The novel reinvigorated Hemingway's literary reputation, initiated a reexamination of his entire body of work, and was received with such alacrity that it restored many readers' confidence in Hemingway's capability as an author. "In its own terms the book is as nearly faultless as any short novel of our times. The writing has the quality of being familiar and yet perpetually new. That is the essence of classical prose" (Malcom Cowley, New York Herald Tribune). "In the Old man and the Sea Ernest Hemingway has returned to the stripped, lean, objective narrative so characteristic of him at his best.a story which is beautiful in its description, and of clean thrusting power in its pursuit" (Edward Weeks, The Atlantic). It was the basis for the 1958 film directed by John Sturges, with the screenplay by Peter Viertel, starring Spencer Tracy. Dimitri Tiomkin won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for his work on the film. James Wong Howe was also nominated for best color cinematography. The same year, Tracy was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Seller Inventory # 95115
