Wir werden mit ihm Zeuge unerhörter Ereignisse. Zunächst muss Pinfold erleben, dass unter der farbigen Besatzung des Schiffes eine Meuterei ausbricht; dann stellt er zu seinem Entsetzen fest, dass der Kapitän ein Mörder ist; und schließlich erfährt er, dass er das Opfer einer regelrechten Verschwörung werden soll. Auch als er das unheimliche Schiff mitten auf der Reise verlässt, bleiben die Verfolger auf seiner Spur. Sind diese Schrecken Wirklichkeit, sind sie Ausgeburten eines überanstrengten Kopfes, oder verkörpert sich in ihnen gar die Last eines schlechten Gewissens Gilbert Pinfold selbst gibt dem Leser nach seiner Rückkehr die Erklärung. - Arthur Evelyn St. John Waugh [w??] (* 28. Oktober 1903 in London; 10. April 1966 in Taunton) war ein britischer Schriftsteller. Leben: Der Sohn eines Verlegers studierte am Hertford College in Oxford Geschichte. Er verfasste zeitkritische, z. T. satirische, sprachlich stets brillante Romane. Waugh heiratete 1928 Evelyn Gardner, jüngste Tochter des Lord Burghclere. Da er und seine Frau denselben Vornamen trugen, nannten Freunde sie He-Evelyn und She-Evelyn ( Er-Evelyn" und Sie-Evelyn"). Die Ehe wurde als kurz und unglücklich bezeichnet, 1930 wurde sie geschieden. Nachdem Waugh zum Katholizismus konvertiert war, stellte die Kirche auf seinen Antrag fest, dass seine Ehe von Anfang an null und nichtig gewesen sei, was ihm ermöglichte, die ebenfalls katholische Laura Herbert kirchlich zu heiraten. Diese Ehe dauerte bis zu seinem Tod; aus ihr gingen sieben Kinder hervor, von denen sechs das Erwachsenenalter erreichten. Nach dem Ende seines Zusammenlebens mit Evelyn Gardner, das er in A Handful of Dust (1934) beschrieb, und seiner Konversion zum Katholizismus wurde Waugh zunehmend isoliert. Einer seiner wenigen Freunde war der Schriftsteller Graham Greene, auch er ein Konvertit zum Katholizismus, dessen Ehe ebenfalls auf seinen Antrag von der Kirche annulliert wurde. Waugh befürwortete die Politik von Franco und Mussolini und lehnte die innerkirchlichen Reformen des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils ebenso ab wie die sozialen Reformen in Großbritannien nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Waughs älterer Bruder Alec Waugh (1898 1981) war ebenfalls Schriftsteller und sein Sohn Auberon Waugh (1939 2001) ein bissiger Kolumnist. Werk: Waugh war als schnell erfolgreicher Schriftsteller Mitglied der jungen, verwöhnten Upper Class in den 1920er Jahren. Er hatte ein besonderes Interesse an Bildender Kunst (sein erstes Buch war eine Biographie Dante Gabriel Rossettis, und seine Novelle Love Among the Ruins illustrierte er selbst). Waugh hatte ein besonderes Gespür für Dialoge, von denen sich manche über zwei Seiten hinziehen. Geschätzt war sein makabrer Humor. In Black Mischief verzehrt der Anti-Held aus Versehen seine Geliebte, und The Loved One spielt in der US-amerikanischen Bestattungsindustrie. Waugh beeinflusste zahlreiche Schriftsteller wie Muriel Spark sowie den späteren Literaturnobelpreisträger V. S. Naipaul, der als junger Mann schreiben wollte wie Waugh.[1] Der britische Regisseur Stephen Fry verfilmte unter dem Titel Bright young things Waughs Roman Vile Bodies. Internationale Popularität erlangte Waugh durch die Verfilmung seines Romans Wiedersehen mit Brideshead. Die Miniserie des britischen Fernsehens mit Jeremy Irons und Laurence Olivier von 1981 wurde ein Welterfolg. Seither wurden auch Vile Bodies und A Handful of Dust verfilmt letzterer mit Alec Guinness, der Waugh bewunderte. Bereits früher gab es eine Filmfassung von The Loved One mit Rod Steiger und John Gielgud unter der Regie von Tony Richardson. Im Lexikon der Weltliteratur wird er als radikalkonservativer Zyniker und Kulturpessimist beschrieben, der in kühler, kunstvoller Prosa mit Witz und oft überdeutlicher, farcenhafter Satire die Kuriositäten des modernen Lebens enthüllt. Softening and rubbing to the head and to the heel of the back strip and to the book corners. The lower book edge shows wear. Slight cocking to the spine. Rubbing, slight fading and marking to the book panels. Very noticeable browning and foxing to the text block edges. Offset tanning, browning and foxing to the endpapers. The first few pages of the book are quite markedly foxed and the last few pages are very lightly foxed. The internal pages themselves are moderately brown. This is the first UK edition.
