About this Item: Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1939, 1st edition, First Printing, Sauk City, Wisconsin, 1939. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good+ ( see Description ). Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+ (see description). Virgil Finlay Cover Art (illustrator). First Edition. ----------hard cover, a great copy and most assuredly a one of a kind copy with the accompanying Arkham House material, all contents (book and mailing box and ephemera ) are housed in a custom slipcase made of black cloth and leather with gilt lettering and design (slipcase was lettered as The Outsiders not The Outsider ), slipcase was designed with 2 cavities at the rear with those cavities holding the book and mailing box, both the book and the mailing box have had an additional folding slipcase which is what slides into the cavities (please ask for additional pictures if you want to see anything ), ---overall a Very Good+/Near Fine example, black cloth, corners on front board are bumped, some offset (age toning ) to verso of the front board and front blank endpaper from some of the accompanying paper ephemera, book is completely square and tight and does not have any finger marks or rubbing to the cloth on the boards and spine, top edge of text block is still quite bright, overall a close to Near Fine example but I'll call this Very Good+ because of the bumped corners, ---in a Very Good+ ORIGINAL dustjacket, some shallow flaking and light creasing at the upper spine tip (about .25 inches deep so really very slight ), a wee bit of very light rubbing to the predominately white/light rear panel, ---really a very nice example of the dustjacket on a really nice example of the book ---included with this copy is the ORIGINAL ARKHAM HOUSE MAILING BOX ( still has the 10 cent stamp from Sauk City ---BOOK RATE was very cheap "back in the day" ) with the original mailing label ---as well there is a second AH mailing label with two stamps totaling 4.5 cents (likely used on a letter to the original buyer confirming that his order and payment was received ) ---as well this has the original $3.50 check for a pre-order of this book, that check/cheque has been signed on the rear by AUGUST DERLETH, ---as well this has an original typed letter signed by DERLETH (on his stationery which he used at that time, dated 21 October (obviously 1939 ) ---in that letter DERLETH mentions that he is sending a circular advertising this book, ---that AH circular is included, the circular [ listed in Herron as item #3 / NOT in MAYS ] is among the first publications or things ever printed by AH ---as well there is a small advert likely from a fanzine, that advert has been clipped from a larger page and is likely where the original owner saw the 1st mention of the upcoming publication of The OUTSIDER ( I am unable to identify that advertisement source ) ---and as well there are some random HPL related items ( newspaper clippings, article/essay from The Fantasy Commentator by David H Keller, other paper ephemera including the SWANN Gallery catalogue where this was listed and sold in 1998 ) ---apparently pre-publication orders to ARKHAM HOUSE only totaled about 150 copies so this is one of the earliest copies to go to a subscriber ---, ---in spite of the availability of many 1st editions online (making many authors like Hemingway and Steinbeck seem almost commonplace) the first two Arkham House volumes of Lovecraft writings ( The Outsider and Beyond the Wall of Sleep ) remain elusive, ----------this collection contains: Howard Phillips Lovecraft: OUTSIDER by August Derleth and Donald Wandrei; and the following stories: Dagon; Polaris; Celephais; Hypnos; The Cats of Ulthar; The Strange High House in the Mist; The Statement of Randolph carter; The Silver Key; Through the Gates of the Silver Key; The Outsider; The Music of Erich Zann; The rats in the Walls; Cool Air; He; The Horror at red Hook; The Temple; Arthur Jermyn; The Picture in the House; The festival; The Terrible Old man; The Tomb; The Shunned House; In The Vault; Pickman's Model; The haunter of the dark; The Dreams in the Witch-House; The Thing on the Doorstep; The Nameless City; The Lurking Fear; The Call of Cthulhu; The Colour Out of Space; The Dunwich Horror; At the Mountains of Madness; The Shadow Out of Time; The Shadow over Innsmouth; The Whisperer in darkness, and the essay Supernatural Horror in Literature --- An order from outside of the US or Canada cannot be accepted due to the impossibility of satisfying the necessary export requirements and documentation ---apologies for this, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo ///AUGUST DERLETH SIGNED cheque/check ---GUARANTEED to be AVAILABLE/// Size: 6.25w x 9.25h Inches. Signed (see description). NOT Price Clipped. Seller Inventory # 165869

About this Item: Sauk City: Arkham House, 1939. First Edition. One of the most important publications in the history of the genre. Virtually unknown during his lifetime except to a small group of young admirers, Lovecraft's fame has steadily risen since his untimely death at the age of 46. Today his influence on the modern literary imagination is inestimable, and his praises have been sung by such diverse writers as Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, and Jorge Luis Borges. He was the first genre writer to have his work collected in the Library of America, and his works have inspired a number of films and countless literary imitations. This book, one of only 1200 copies printed, introduced Lovecraft to his first wider readership, and was hailed instantly as a classic. A fine copy in the original dustwrapper illustrated by Virgil Finlay. The jacket has a very small chip to the base of the spine panel, which has the remnants of a small old tape reinforcement to the interior. There is some light shelfwear at the head of the spine and the points. A superior example of a rare and desirable book. Seller Inventory # 8718
