Uniformly bound in publisher's three-quarter brown calf over marbled boards, marbled endpapers, elaborately gilt decorated spines, brown & blk & gilt morocco spine labels, marbled fore-edges (mnr rubbng, some mnr soilng to the foot of spines, toned paper as usual for Hurst), still an attractive and very nice set. The Harper & Brothers editions of most of the major works of Charles Dickens, from the Pickwick Papers to A Tale of Two Cities. Issued with 70 parts in 38 fascicles by the New York Book Concern. Bound in the original New York Book Concern's blue paper wrappers. Conditions of publication, from rear panel: "The work will be issued in Semi-monthly Parts. Each 25 cents. Part will contain 48 pages of double column letter-press, profusely illustrated. The 50 cent Parts will contain 96 pages, with double the number of illustrations. No subscriber's name will be taken for less than the entire work." A couple of fascicles have covers which have been gingerly reattached and several have wear at the spine; in general they are in Very Good or Good condition. Half leather binding with gilt decorated spine and marbled boards and end papers, page edges plain. Page edges standing proud on a number of volumes but all checked and attached. David Copperfield has been respined and repaired with the original spine laid onto new leather, this makes the volume a little taller. In this volume the half title is glued to the frontispiece although a previous owner has tried to separate the two leaving some closed tears. Page edges good condition all marbled darkened to the top edge, page edges standing rpoud on a number of volumes but all checked and attached. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound, front hinge cracked to Pickwick but holding well and leather intact, rear hinge cracked but holding with leather intact to Sketches by Boz and David Copperfield, otherwise sound.
