About this Item: Collins, 1962. Hardback. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st edition. ~1st UK edition, 1st impression. Dark blue cloth, unfaded, silver lettering to spine. With original pictorial dustwrapper, slight wear at top spine only. Top edges mildly toned. Map of 'The Lands Beyond' to endpapers, printed in blue. A very few spots of foxing to pp. 9-14 only. No foxing to dustwrapper. Frontis. No ownership marks. Profusely illustrated by cartoonist, author, and satirist Jules Feiffer. Feiffer was in fact very much involved in the genesis of this classic children's book: he shared a house with its author, the architect Norman Juster, and persuaded him to finish the story he was writing about 'a boy who asked too many questions' by providing some initial illustrations. The Times Literary Supplement reviewed this first UK edition as 'something every adult seems sure will turn into a modern Alice . illustrated by every grown-up's favourite child-like pictures with the built-in sad sophistication, the work of Jules Feiffer'. Juster's novel has indeed become established as a classic, very much in the vein of Alice in Wonderland. A copy in excellent condition.~Robust packaging. All UK orders trackable, others on request. Size: 256pp. Seller Inventory # YY3154

About this Item: 1962. London; Collins. 1962. 8vo. Original navy blue linson boards, lettered in silver to spine, pictorial map endpapers, preserved in pictorial dustwrapper; pp. [viii] + 255; illustrated throughout in line with half-, full-, and double-pages drawings; externally and internally fine and unmarked bar a small adhesion to final text leaf, without inscription, protected by an equally fine, unclipped dustwrapper (15s) with only a little light dusting to lower panel; increasingly scarce in this condition. First UK edition, first printing. Published by Epstein & Carroll, New York, the previous year. This modern children's classic has been described by the prominent book critic Naomi Lewis as 'the finest modern book in the Carroll line'. It shares something in common with Alice in that it describes a child's search for truth in an adult world. Frustrated by the systems in schools Juster was inspired to write this story of a young boy, Milo, who is left cold by traditional teaching. When a magic tollbooth turns up at his home, wrapped in purple, he drives through it in his toy car to discover a fascinating world beyond, full of unexpected people and places who help him reconnect with his love of learning. There, he acquires two faithful companions and goes on a quest to restore to the kingdom its exiled princesses named Rhyme and Reason from the Castle in the Air. In the process, he learns valuable lessons, finding a love of learning.
