This copy was almost certainly inscribed for Albert Ullin on that occasion (October 2, 1993). The Phantom Tollbooth was originally published by Epstein & Carroll (distributed by Random House) in 1961. About this Item: London: Collins, St. James Place. 1962, FIRST BRITISH PRINTING, 1962. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. FEIFFER DJ clipped; has five closed tears on corner seams; chipping on spine edges and along top back edge; two inch closed tear on bottom left; generally in FAIR condition (SEE SCANs). Book did much better and is VERY GOOD+; covered in navy blue cloth and has silver lettering on spine. All pages clean. FLYER OF SIGNING EVENT INCLUDED. STORY: A young boy named Milo who unexpectedly receives a magic tollbooth one afternoon and, having nothing better to do, drives through it in his toy car, transporting him to the Kingdom of Wisdom, once prosperous but now troubled. There, he acquires two faithful companions and goes on a quest to restore to the kingdom its exiled princesses named Rhyme and Reason from the Castle in the Air. In the process, he learns valuable lessons, finding a love of learning. The text is full of puns and wordplay, such as when Milo unintentionally jumps to Conclusions, an island in Wisdom, thus exploring the literal meanings of idioms. Signed by Author(s). A bright and excellent copy in price clipped dust jacket with shallow chipping to spine ends and lower edges, chip to mid front spine edge that effects part of the "L" to title on spine, light chipping and splitting along flap folds with tape at verso. A very presentable copy. First edition, first printing with publisher Epstein and Carroll printed on dust jacket and stated on title page (later editions have Random House as publisher).
