Item Description: John Slark, London, 1885, 1885. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fair. First Thus. Blue calf. Three volumes. 451, 456, 443pp. Gilt-stamped spines with raised bands. Marbled endpapers. A good reading set inasmuch as the joints are cracked or beginning to crack. Vol I front cover loosening from the joint. Faded spines dressed so they don't look so faded on the shelf. All edges gilt, but a 3/4" x 1 1/2" area on the bottom edge of vol. I has the gilt removed. An ink stain had bled into the bottoms of the page margins of that volume & was carefully removed, but also removing the gilt at that location. Some shadows or outlines on the page margins where the ink was removed. For someone who will be using these volume rather hard, some joint work/reinforcement would be important for the long haul. But, with all faults mentioned, this set will economically serve someone's use well. Vol. I has etching of Shelley. Vol. II has fold out facsimile of Shelley's writing. Vol. III has etching of Shelley's tomb. Bound by Spoittiswoode & Co., Ltd. Bookseller Inventory # FLIC028

Of his standing as a poet there has never been any real doubt. As a master of lyric in its purest form he is almost unsurpassed, and his ear for rhythm and musical cadence is unerring. He is not, like Keats, a lover of earthly things. but in his quest for beauty moves in a rarefied atmosphere all his own; at its finest, his work is the distilled essence of poetry, purified of all grosser elements."
