Hardcover. ,Small 8vo,Complete six volume set uniformly bound in full brown calf,A handsome set, nicely bound with dentilled edges, the gilt-embellished spines in compartments, and all edges and endpapers marbled. Each volume about 300 pages. Elegant armorial bookplate in each volume indicating provenance being from the library of T. Horsman Coles (Coles was the father-in-law of Arthur Wellesley Soames, the British politician and architect). Volume 1 inscribed on first blank leaf 'To dear father / from his loving children / Sept. 17th 1887'. The binding is signed 'Bickers & Son / Leicester Sq. London. Bindings tight on all volumes, and contents clean. Some light rubbing to extremities of board. Volume I, III and IV have lost portions of the morroco spine label indicating volume number. Presentation Copy SIGNED AND INSCRIBED by Harry Gordon Selfridge front end page of Vol. 1 - "To Mrs. Skidmore With best wishes from H. Gordon Selfridge Wed. April 6, 1921". Harry Gordon Selfridge was the founder of Selfridges department store in London whose innovations revolutionized English merchandising and created a fortune for him. His life is the subject of the popular PBS TV series "Mr. Selfridge" starring Jeremy Piven. This set contains eight volumes bound as four from the Edition in 17 Volumes ( lacking Vols. 13 and 17), as follows: Pauline-Sordello, Vols 3 & 4 bound in Vol. I, Vols. 5 &6, and 7 bound in Vol. II, Vols. 8-10 and Vols. 12 & 13 bound in Vol. III, and Vols. 14 & 15 and Vol. 16 with General Index bound in Vol. IV. In signed Riviere & Son fine binding of half vellum over powder blue buckram, the backs richly gilt, top edges gilt, marbled end pages, Near Fine, light soiling to vellum, scant toning at illustrations. Each of the eight volumes have a different tissue-guarded frontispiece engraved portrait of Browning. Most likely a unique set especially bound for presentation by Selfridge, as no other similarly bound sets published by John Murray appear in the current market or in auction records. About this Item: London Smith, Elder and Co. 1878, 1880, 1880. Together 2 volumes. The fourth edition of the first volume, the first edition of the second volume. INSCRIBED IN EACH VOLUME BY BROWNING. 8vo, original sienna cloth lettered and decorated in gilt and black. xi, 348; vii, 371, [2]. The first volume has been expertly rebacked to match the original; the second has been recased with some restoration at the spine ends; both have new endpapers and bear the stamp of the College for Working Women. A very good set. AN INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY of each volume. The first is inscribed "To the Members of the Working Women's College with Robert Browning's kind regards, Jan. 14 '80." The second volume is inscribed "With Robert Browning's best respects and regards." Presentation copies of Browning's writings are quite scarce. Seller Inventory # 8823
