About this Item: New York Elizabeth Ann Guild 1927 & 1932, 1932. A two-volume set: ‘The President’s Daughter. The Love Story of President Harding’ is a later printing; the prints and plates of the book's first edition from 1920 were seized by an agent of the Society for the Suppression of Vice in 1927 but the case was dismissed. The sequel, ‘Honesty or Politics’ is a first edition. Both volumes are illustrated and in uniformly near fine condition with only minor signs of use and both are in very good only slightly used dust jackets with some tiny chips and tears, and with ‘Honesty or Politics’ jacket price-clipped. Considered to be among the first popular ‘kiss and tell’ best-sellers, these books tell the story of married President Warren G. Harding’s affair with his friend’s daughter, Nan Britton, before and after his rise to the Presidency, including their lovemaking taking place in a closet in the White House. This relationship resulted in the birth of a daughter who was recognized as his daughter by the courts after Harding’s abrupt death in office in 1923. No major publisher would handle (unlike today) Britton’s memoirs and it was virtually privately published with some bookstores refusing to handle it. Besides detailing her relationship with Harding, the books are a plea for concern for unwed mothers and their children in a time when there was little understanding. Rare in dust jackets.
