About this Item: -Bantam -, 1953. Published only two years after Strangers on a Train, Highsmiths openly lesbian novel, rejected by her first publisher, and only in the 1990s published under her own name as "Carol", followed in the 2000s by the film. Second printing of the Bantam paperback edition in September 1953 at 25 cents, following the first Bantam edition of August the same year (at 35 cents). Number 1148. Some minor creasing at the top right, spine a little worn at the base with some creasing and rubbing, final page block looks a little tender and is slightly offset, a little creasing to the rear head edge corner, and some very minor loss of laminate at the rear head edge. Otherwise a very serviceable, and collectible copy of a scarce item. More pictures can be made available. I have just catalogued 49 Patricia Highsmith first editions and proof copies from my own collection. Please ask for a list if you are also a collector. Seller Inventory # 27297

About this Item: Coward-McCann Inc., New York, 1952. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. Dust jacket inside front flap reads $3.00. 276 pages. Mylar protective wrapper. This title has particular significance as it was an early work written by highly acclaimed mystery writer Patricia Highsmith, most notably known for The Talented Mr. Ripley. Also, because of its lesbian content, it was popular in the 1950's among lesbian pulp fiction readers. It is extremely scarce, especially with original dust jacket. From the inside flap: "The Price of Salt is the story of two women and a decision that each one had to make. For Therese happiness meant risking her future, for Carol it meant sacrificing her past, and for neither could the happiness, if chosen, be assured for it lay outside of convention, scorned by society, condemned by law. The dust jacket has significant condition including a complete separation of the front and spine jacket panel from the rear. There is obvious edge wear with some small chips and tears. The spine panel has a piece missing from bottom (see photo) as well as some chipping and tears to top. Significant foxing on rear jacket panel. Inside flaps are intact. The dust jacket is now covered with a Mylar protective wrapper. The aqua colored cloth shows light surface soiling. Inside front hinge has cracked almost entirely. Original owner's name as well as lending library stamp markings, in pen, on front end paper. Some foxing also apparent on front and rear endpapers as well as outer edges. Inside pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. Seller Inventory # ABE-1511792310884

About this Item: Coward-McCann, Inc., [1953]., New York:, 1953. First edition. First edition of Highsmith's first and only lesbian novel. Fine, bright copy in dust jacket with light professional restoration to spine ends, corners, and extremities. This book has been reissued in paperback format using her preferred title, Carol. A sizable part of the manuscript was first published as Carol In A Thousand Cities in the paperback anthology of that title edited by her friend Marijane Meaker (as Ann Aldrich), with whom Highsmith then shared a house in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. A lovely copy of a difficult title. Seller Inventory # 27091
